Summer Men's Golf Update: August 24

MANHATTAN, Kan. - With the summer golf season coming to a close, members of the Kansas State men's golf team are finishing their competition across the country.

Senior Joe Kinney fired 5-over par 285 to finish 12th out of 138 players in the Illinois State Amateur at the Bloomington Country Club. Kinney's top-15 finish will exempt him into the 2010 Illinois State Amateur.

Senior Mitch Gregson participated in the 19th Metropolitan Amateur played at the Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis.  Gregson's final round score of 69 was the second lowest score of the day. Gregson finished in sixth place after carding an 11-over par 221.

Gregson and all-American Robert Streb teed it up in the Scratch Players Championship at the par-70 Quail Creek Country Club in Oklahoma City, Okla. The event was a preview to this week's US Amateur in Tulsa, Okla., with many world-ranked amateurs in both tournaments. Both Wildcats played steady golf with Gregson recording a 13th-place finish, while Streb finished 14th.

Gregson will participate in the US Amateur, which runs August 24-30, beginning with 36-holes of medal play at the Southern Hills Country Club and Cedar Ridge Country Club. The field will then trim from 312 competitors to 64 players for match play, beginning on Wednesday, August 26. Former Wildcat and 2001 Kansas Amateur Champion, Matt Williams, is also the field. See www.usga.org for live scoring during the entire tournament.
