Ida Captures High Plains Amateur Title

GARDEN CITY, Kan. After carding a 2-over 73 during the first round, Joe Ida came back with a of 4-under 67 in the second and final round to claim the the 2008 High Plains Amateur Championship at the par-71 Southwind Country Club on Sunday.


Ida was the only golfer in the field to finish under par and he was one of five current K-State golfers and one former Wildcat to finish in the top 10.


Junior Spencer Alefs carded a 4-over 146 to finish third, just ahead of a pair of juniors, Joe Kinney and Mitchell Gregson, who finished with a 5-over 147 to tie for fourth place.


Sophomore Ross Geubelle carded a 6-over 148 to place sixth in the amateur event.


Former golfer Tyler Cummins finished the tournament with an 8-over 150, placing in a tie for eighth.


Sophomore Jason Schulte rounded out the group with an 11-over 153, finishing in a tie for 10th.


The Wildcats open their season with the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, Sept. 22-23, at Colbert Hills in Manhattan.
