Wildcats Begin 2012-13 Season in Wichita

Ben Juffer
MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men’s golf will open the 2012-13 season as the Wildcats travel to Wichita, Kan., to compete in the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic, Monday and Tuesday, September 10 and 11, at the Wichita Country Club. The event will consist of 36 holes on Monday, followed by 18 holes on Tuesday, with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start to begin play each day.
All 10 Wildcats on the roster will be competing in the tournament with seniors and co-captains Ben Juffer and Curtis Yonke, juniors Daniel Wood and Alex Carney, and sophomore Kyle Weldon making up the first scoring lineup of the season. Juniors David Klaudt and Tyler Norris, and freshmen Matt Green, Connor Schrock and Hank Simpson will be competing in the event as individuals.
“This is a great opportunity to take all the players down to compete in Wichita,” said K-State head coach Tim Norris. “The Country Club is always in great shape and should yield some low scores. Our players have really been focused in their practice, and I know they will be ready to play.”
Juffer is coming on a terrific summer in which the West Des Moines, Iowa, native won the amateur division of the 2012 Waterloo Open and earned a second-place finish at the 2012 Kansas Amateur. Last season, Juffer participated in 10 of the Wildcats 12 events, highlighted by a career-best 18-hole score of 65 to win the 2012 Wyoming Cowboy Classic.
Yonke returns for his final season at K-State after a solid junior campaign. Last year, Yonke had four top-20 finishes, including a career day at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic where he carded career-lows in 18-hole, 36-hole and 54-hole scores.
As a freshman, Weldon finished second on the team with a 74.14 stroke average and placed in the top 20 on five occasions, including a season-best fifth-place showing at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational last September. Weldon also found success this summer as he took home top honors at the 2012 Metropolitan Amateur in Saint Louis, Mo.
Last season, the Wildcats opened up the year by capturing second place at the 2011 Shocker Classic, placing three golfers in the top 10, including returning leaders Yonke and Juffer, who placed tied for sixth and 10th, respectively.
In addition to K-State, the field for this year’s tournament will consist of Newman, Northeastern State, Oklahoma Christian, Oklahoma City, Texas Arlington, Texas Wesleyan, Wichita State and William Woods.
