Wildcats Finish Second to Open Season

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. The Kansas State men’s golf team finished tied for second to open the season at the Central Region Preview following final-round play on Sunday. The Wildcats carded a three-round score of 49-over par 913, tying with SMU as the runner-up. Louisville won the tournament by firing a 54-hole score of 31-over par 895. Individually, Derek Fathauer of Louisville and Colt Knost of SMU tied for first, each firing a 5-over par 221.

K-State was one of three teams that had to complete second-round play Sunday morning after play was suspended Saturday evening due to darkness. The Wildcats shot a 315 during the second round, dropping them from second to third before final round play began. K-State used a third-round score of 12-over par 300 to finish in second.

“I was very proud of the way the team played today,” head coach Tim Norris said. “The second round hurt us. We gave away some strokes there, but everyone threw in a good round throughout the tournament, which was good to see.”

Freshman Mitchell Gregson, who carded a 1-under par 71 through the first 18 holes, struggled during the second round as he shot an 81. However, the Waterloo, Ill., product rebounded with a 2-over par 73 during the final round to finish the tournament tied for sixth at 9-over par 225.

Robert Streb, who shot uncharacteristic rounds of 80 and 78 in the first and second rounds, respectively, started the final round tied for 32nd, but fought back with a final-round score of 2-over par 73. He jumped nine spots to finish tied for 23rd at 15-over par 231.

“Robert really had it going today and hung together after his first two rounds,” said Norris.

An improved final round was also put forth by Kyle Yonke who shot a 3-over par 74 to finish 25th following a 81-77-74232 (+16) performance.

Freshmen Joe Ida and Jason Schulte tied for 30th and 43rd, respectively. Ida finished with a three-round score of 22-over par 238, one stroke ahead of Schulte, who shot a 23-over par 239.

The Wildcats will be back in action next weekend, Sept. 16-17, as they head to Ann Arbor, Mich. to participate in the Wolverine Intercollegiate.
