Wildcats Look to Rebound in Lawrence

MANHATTAN, Kan. - After a slow start to the 2010-11 season last weekend, the Kansas State men’s golf team returns to action as the Wildcats travel to Lawrence, Kan., to play in the Kansas Invitational, Monday, September 20, through Tuesday, September 21, at the Alvamar Golf Club. The event tees off Monday with a 36-hole shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The final round is another shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, with an awards ceremony immediately following the conclusion of the tournament.

THE LINEUP: K-State will feature five golfers to compete as a team, along with two others who will play as individuals. Sophomores Curtis Yonke and Ben Juffer will once again lead the charge, along with freshmen Thomas Birdsey and Jack Watson. The remaining three lineup spots will not be determined until this weekend.    

LOOK AT THE FIELD: The 13-team field includes: Drake, Jacksonville, Kansas, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, Missouri State, Nebraska, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts, South Dakota State, Southern Illinois, UMKC and Western Kentucky. 

2007 KANSAS INVITATIONAL: The last time K-State competed at the Kansas Invitational was September 17-18, 2007. The Wildcats were led to a fourth-place finish by Wildcat great Mitchell Gregson, who tied for 16th individually with a 223 over 54 holes.  As a team, the Cats scored a 34-over par 898. 

LAST TIME OUT: The Wildcats stumbled out of the gate of the 2010-11 season, finishing 15th at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate in Zionsville, Ind., last weekend. Sophomore Curtis Yonke was the Wildcats’ top player, finishing the tournament at 13-over par to put him in a tie for 40th. Fellow sophomore Ben Juffer sat in a tie for 10th place after the completion of 36 holes, but struggled in round three to drop into a tie for 54th.
