K-State Hosts Jim Colbert Intercollegiate

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Kansas State men’s golf team returns to action as they host a nine-team field at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, Monday, September 21, through Tuesday, September 22, at Colbert Hills Golf Course. The event tees off Monday with a 36-hole shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (CST).  The final round is another shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. (CST) on Tuesday, with an awards ceremony immediately following the conclusion of the tournament.

LOOK AT THE FIELD: The nine-team field includes: In-state rival Kansas; Missouri State and Illinois State of the Missouri Valley Conference; Oral Roberts, South Dakota State, Western Illinois and UMKC of the Summit League.

2008 JIM COLBERT INTERCOLLEGIATE: The Kansas State men’s golf captured the title at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate in 2008. The strong team effort resulted in a score of 19-over par 883 (294-299-290), finishing ahead of UMKC and Western Illinois. Kansas State was the only team to break 300 all three rounds and the only team to hold a 54-hole score lower than 900. Furthermore, K-State’s 54-hole score of 883 was the lowest since the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic in the spring of 2008. Wildcat golfer Mitchell Gregson took home the individual championship with a final-round score of 4-under par 68, giving him a 54-hole score of even-par 216. Gregson was able to birdie three of the last four holes to capture the crown.

EARLY SUCCESS: Senior Joe Kinney competed in only four events for the Wildcats last season, but in his first action this season at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, Kinney carded the best score in his career when he fired a 2-under par 211 tying for fifth place with fellow Wildcat Mitchell Gregson. Kinney also shot a second round 69, which is the lowest 18-hole score of his career.

HOST – COLBERT HILLS GOLF COURSE: Colbert Hills is a huge links-style course that plays at 7,525 yards from the back tees, nicknamed the Black and Blue tees. It lies on a superb site of rolling hills with changes in elevation that most Americans had no idea could exist in the prairies of Kansas. Colbert Hills includes a new clubhouse, a state of the art driving range and enough acreage for a nine-hole teaching course.

Colbert Hill is hosting the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate for the fourth time since 2003. The course has also hosted the NCAA Central Regional in May of 2003.
