Wildcats Within Striking Distance at Home

MANHATTAN, Kan. Mitch Gregson and Robert Streb both turned in a 1-under 71 in the second round of the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate and helped put Kansas State in second place after the first day of competition at Colbert Hills Golf Course on Monday.

Gregson and Streb rebounded after shooting 3-over 75 in the opening round and were tied with six other competitors for second place on the leader board at 146 (+2). K-State freshman Daniel Wood, who made his collegiate debut on Monday, was also tied for second after shooting 72-74146 (+2) as an individual.

The Wildcats trimmed seven strokes off of their opening-round score and combined for a field-leading 292 in the second, but still trailed Miami (Ohio) by eight strokes after 36 holes.

K-State’s Joe Ida contributed two counting rounds with a 75-75150 (+6) and was tied for 11th at the end of competition. Kyle Yonke, 74-78152, and Kyle Smell, 79-75154, joined their three teammates in the top-25.

Kansas State made up the most ground on par-5 holes, gaining 10 strokes on a field-low 4.75 strokes per par-5 and tallied the most birdies as a team with 31. The Wildcats second-round 292 is the second-lowest score for Kansas State in five years of competition at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate.

Marquette’s Mike Van Sickel led the field with a 70-74144 (+2) and Missouri State’s Damaso Carrera turned in a 5-under-67 for the low round of the day. The third and final round of the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
