K-State Improves During Final Day

RENO, Nev. - Following a second-round score of 299 to tie for 11th heading into the final day, the Kansas State men's golf team improved seven strokes and moved up two spots on the leader board during the final round of the Wolf Pack Classic on Tuesday. The Wildcats carded a third-round score of 292 on the par 72, 7,100-yard Wolf Run G.C., finishing the event with a team score of 12-over par 876 (285-299-292), tying with UTEP for ninth place. Iowa State won the event after firing a 22-under par 842.

"We had the sixth-best team score for the day, which was good to see," head coach Tim Norris said. "We just spotted way too many shots yesterday."

Utah's Dustin Pimm, who led the field through the first 36 holes, took home individual honors after firing a 66-66-73205 (-11).

For the first time this season, sophomore Robert Streb led the Wildcats in an event. He tied for 20th overall at even-par 216 (71-72-73). It was his best finish since tying for 12th at the 2006 NCAA Central Regional, and his best finish vs. par since the Barona Collegiate Cup last October.

"He's really close to busting through, but, until he does, that's all he is - really close," said Norris.

Three strokes behind Streb was freshman Mitchell Gregson. The Waterloo, Ill., native, carded three counting rounds of 73-74-72 en route to a tie for 36th at 3-over par 219.

Another freshman, Joe Ida, recorded a second-straight solid performance, tying for 48th following at 5-over par 221.

"Our freshmen have been awfully good. When we get them all going at one time, it will be very exciting," Norris said.

After carding a first-round score of 2-under par 70, junior Kyle Yonke slipped in rounds two and three, tallying a 77 and 75, respectively. He finished the tournament tied for 52nd at 6-over par 222.

Senior Jay Kramer, who pitched in a counted round of 76 during round two, carded a 15-over par 231 for the event, finishing 87th.

Kansas State will be back in action next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 9-10 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif.
