AKRON, Ohio – Coming off a third-place finish at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate, the Kansas State men's golf team will compete in the Firestone Invitational for the third consecutive season on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 10-11, at the Firestone Country Club’s north course in Akron, Ohio.

The tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday, with tee times from 8:30 a.m., to 10 a.m., teeing off holes No. 1 and No. 10. The Firestone Country Club was the site of this year’s World Golf Championship Bridgestone Invitational won by Adam Scott.

K-State will use its third different lineup of the season as walk-on Alex Carney makes his second scoring-lineup appearance of the season after a team-high sixth place finish at this week’s Jim Colbert Intercollegiate. Kyle Smell, Chase Chamberlin, Ben Juffer and Kyle Weldon will join Carney in the team’s fourth tournament of the fall.

Several Wildcats will look to continue strong starts to the 2011-12 season, including Smell and Weldon. Smell finished two of the first three tournaments in the top 10, while Weldon finished the first two tournaments of his freshman season in fifth and 13th.

Chamberlin and Juffer are the only members of the scoring lineup that have competed in the Firestone Invitational. In the 2010-11 season, the pair finished in 32nd and 52nd, respectively.

In last season’s event, K-State finished 11th as a team and was led by Thomas Birdsey, who finished in a tie for 20th.

Joining K-State in next week’s tournament are Akron, Ball State, Davidson, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, Indiana, Iowa State, Maryland, Miami (Ohio), Nebraska, SMU, South Alabama, South Carolina-Aiken, St. Mary’s (CA), Toledo and Wisconsin.
