Gregson Captures SCU Invite

San Jose, Calif. Kansas State junior men’s golfer Mitchell Gregson tied the Silver Valley Creek Country Club 54-hole score and carded the second-lowest round in school history en route to his second individual championship of the season as the K-State men’s golf team concluded play at the Santa Clara Invitational.

The Wildcats, who were just five strokes back heading into Tuesday’s final round, came up one stroke shy as a team as K-State finished second. Kansas State, who placed four of its five team competitors in the top 10, carded a team score of 3-over 287 in the final round to finish with a 54-hole score of 6-over 858. With the second-place finish, K-State picked up its fourth top-10 finish in as many tries and has placed either first or second in three of the first four tournaments.

South Dakota State, which lead heading into the final round, won the team title with a 5-over 857 (286-280-291). The Wildcats and Jackrabbits blew away the field as British Columbia, which finished third, carded a 27-over 879.

“It was a case of just a couple bogies at the end of the tournament, but those count just as much as the ones at the beginning,” head coach Tim Norris said.

Gregson, who tallied two sub-70 rounds on Monday, finished the event with a 1-under 70 on Tuesday, giving him a winning score of 12-under 201. Besides his 54-hole score accomplishments, Gregson’s second-round score of 64 also tied for the third-lowest round in school history.

“What can you say about Mitch,” Norris said. “He tied the competitive course record. The exciting thing is that I still see his best golf ahead of him.”

Senior Robert Streb, who struggled in the first two rounds, came back with a round of even-par 71 on Tuesday. Streb earned his fourth top-10 finish of the season, tying for 10th at 7-over 220.

Jason Schulte tallied his first top-10 finish of the season as he tied with Streb for 10th after a 1-over 72 on Tuesday.

Kansas State will compete in its final fall tournament next week, Monday and Tuesday, October 27 and 28, as the Wildcats travel to Las Cruces, N.M., to compete in the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate.
