K-State Finishes in Middle of Pack at Club Glove

SOMIS, Calif. Three of five K-State golfers improved on their scores from Monday and helped the Wildcats turn in their best round of the Club Glove Intercollegiate on the final day of competition at Somis Country Club on Tuesday.

Joe Ida, Mitchell Gregson and Robert Streb all found a way to drop strokes from their scores in the third round and along with Kyle Smell, gave Kansas State a final round 308, a 16-stroke improvement from the first 18 holes on Monday. The Wildcats final tally of 320-316-308944 (+80) was good enough for 7th place out of the 12 team field.

Strong Santa Ana winds and smoke from nearby wildfires continued to torment golfers. Tournament-host Pepperdine turned in the first sub-300 round on Tuesday and won the event with a 300-306-299905 (+41).

“It’s a tough golf course on a picture perfect day,” K-State head coach Tim Norris laughed. “The wind today was stronger and gustier. I don’t know if the scores reflected it, but I thought today was a pretty tough day. The guys did a pretty good job of battling through it. At the start of the day we were seven shots out of 6th and seven shots out of last. There was definitely some pressure there.”

Ida paced the Wildcats throughout the tournament and finished tied for 15th with a 79-79-75233 (+17), one stroke better than Gregson, who finished tied for 17th with his 79-79-76234 (+18). Streb finished 27-over after shooting 81-83-79243.

“This was no place to make your college debut,” Norris said. “It wasn’t his first event, he played in the Colbert Intercollegiate. This is a man-sized course, it will test every single aspect of your game. Then, with the conditions it was doubly tough.

“It’s a learning experience for all of them, that’s why we enjoy coming. We don’t like shooting these scores, but all of them come out with a better appreciation of what it takes to play golf at the next level.”

The Wildcats have two more events this fall and next tee off at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces, N.M. on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 29-30. K-State closes the fall at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif., on Nov. 5-7.
