Wildcats Tied for Third after Day One at NMSU

LAS CRUCES, N.M. The Kansas State men’s golf team started slow Monday at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate but carded a 4-over par second round score of 288 to give them a 36-hole score of 16-over par 584 to sit in a tie for third place with Washington State at the par 71, 7,7074-yard Silver Creek Valley Country Club.

The University of Denver is currently in the lead with a 9-over par 577. Miami of Ohio is in sole possession of second place after carding an 11-over par 579. Kansas State and Washington State lead fifth-place team Nevada by one stroke after the Wolf Pack carded a 17-over par 585.

“Mitch (Gregson) and Robert (Streb) played some great golf this afternoon. Robert is playing very well and Mitch came back after his worst round of the fall, so far this year, and had a nice round of 2-under par 69 this afternoon,” said head coach Tim Norris. “The other guys have here and there. Jason Schulte was pretty solid and Kyle Smell had a very nice round this morning for us and his afternoon wasn’t to bad. He had a couple of bad swings that cost him about five shots. Ross Geubelle was also pretty solid today. Hopefully we can get a couple of real low scores tomorrow, get a couple of the other guys to contribute and we will see where that puts us.”

Jarred Bossio of Idaho is atop the leader board after he carded a 68-70138 4-under par. Tied for first place after carding a 69-69138 is Pat Grady from Big 12 foe, Colorado.

Streb carded a 1-over par 72 in the first round of the day but carded a 1-under par 70 in the second round to shoot an even par 142, and sits in a tie for ninth place. Gregson, coming off his second win of the season last week at the Santa Clara Invitational, is in a tie for 22nd after carding a 3-over par 145. Gregson carded the lowest round for the Wildcats with a 2-under par 69.

Smell Carded a 6-over par 148 and sits in a tie for 36th place heading into Tuesday’s final round. Schulte carded a 7-over par 149 to place in a tie for 43rd. Geubelle rounded out the rest of the Wildcat golfers with a 9-over par 151 and is in a tie for 53rd.

The Wildcats look to rally from seven shots back on Tuesday with an 8:00 a.m. (MT) shotgun start at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate. Final results will be posted on www.kstatesports.com as soon as they are made available.
