K-State Quotes
Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening statement...
"I am extremely proud of our basketball team. I think we lined up against one of America's finest programs tonight and fought extremely hard from the tip to the finish. Defensively, it is a very tough Texas A&M team to have to find ways to produce offense and often a tough challenge this year for our basketball team. Tonight, we really grew off of the experiences that our non-conference provided. Individually, and as a team, I feel like it was our best night in terms of our offensive decisions and chemistry out there on each position on the floor. We are extremely excited and extremely proud of just the balance that we brought to the floor tonight."

On the offensive balance...
"That balance is what propelled us to the victory tonight. I thought we were terrific in sharing the ball. We had people who stepped up and who wanted the responsibility to make and finish plays. When you look at the stat sheet, quite frankly, there was no one who played that in one way performed that did not impact us offensively. It has taken a while for some of the new and younger players to understand what that means, but we got that and it felt great. It was a key to our success tonight. I want to credit our basketball team for our growth. It was a key for our success tonight."

Junior guard Brittany Chambers
On the team’s performance...
"They were guarding our three heavy tonight and on a lot of screens, they were setting high screens for us. It was just not open tonight. I think that I was not shooting as well as I have on other nights, but we had to find a way for me to score, and that was me going to the basket and trying to get points in the paint. Also, cutting to the basket and opening up for other people."

Junior guard Mariah White
On her game-winning basket...
"I just dribbled around. I had my team from the bench come down. Nobody was open so I had no one to throw it to. I just said 'Dear Lord, help me with this shot.' I just threw up the shot, and it went in."

Texas A&M Quotes
Head Coach Gary Blair
Opening statement…
“I think basically, you have to give Mariah White a lot of credit and not just for the last shot. I had a senior on her because my point guards were sitting on the bench, but (Skylar) Collins played pretty well the majority of the game. She fell down a couple of times; she gave up the opening tip when she handed the ball to (Brittany) Chambers and that was just a downer to start the overtime. But Mariah White played pretty well; she is not a jump shooter, she is a driver. When everything was taken away, she puts the ball on the floor and we allowed her to get side-by-side and the kid just made a play. Eleven assists, two turnovers and she hit the winning basket. It was not Chambers that beat us; it was Mariah White. Carter did an adequate job in the ballgame but she lost her. That was a big three that she hit either in overtime or near the end. (Carter) said it was a screen but I think that she had room to get through. What you have to do when you are guarding Chambers, is you have to quit looking at what is happening on the floor and focus on Chambers and then you might have a chance to get through the screen. We saw Marist get through the screens better than we did and Marist is not supposedly the defensive juggernaut that we are supposed to be. We gave up 60 percent on a Carolina-break play, on a back-screen, and we were sitting up there and ran up there like we were going to hug a sportswriter and K-State just ran up there and threw it over the back. One time, our help-side defending could have come over but she just stood there and did not help. This basketball team has been playing like this for a long time, where everybody circles on the calendar when they play us and we have to respond. Getting to the Final Four and to the NCAA Tournament is not within our reach right now until we learn how to play better and smarter. The smarter team won tonight. The team that executed their offense in the last five seconds of their offense won the ballgame tonight. Give Chambers and White a lot of credit. (Tasha) Dickey came in and went 5-for-5 in the first half. Tyra White was supposed to be guarding her. That is why those other kids are not sitting up here in the press room because we gave up 60 percent in the second half. Last year, we did the same thing but gave up 50 percent when we were here for the ballgame, so same time, second verse. We have to get better. Right now, I feel about like the Dallas Cowboys or A&M’s football teams feel at the end-of-game situation that we are not making. I had four seniors on the floor, even the last play out there; we just let the ball bounce. We have not worked on the play but we just let the ball drop instead of diving. It still bounced in bounds. You just cannot play that way. I am frustrated as a coach. I have to teach better but drills are not going to get us better. Looking at film, basketball IQ and finding a heartbeat as a team is what is going to get us better. Me choosing a point guard and going with that point guard is going to make us better.”

Senior Sydney Carter
On Brittany Chambers performance …
“It makes it very tough just because she is hitting shots and I have to make sure that I am not taking any plays off. I know that she is going to be involved in every plan; either she is going to be the screener or the shooter, so I have just have to be on my P’s and Q’s the whole game. I let her get away from me on a couple of flair-screens and she just knocked them down.”

On guarding Brittany Chambers…
“ I think I was wearing her down a little bit and making her run off of screens and making her rush a couple of shots of the dribble. I was doing a pretty good job in the first half. In the second half, they kept setting more flair-screen for her and she was knocking them down in the second half.”

On K-State’s second half scoring run…
“I think that was where we kind of lost the game. We could never capitalize on anything. We just turned the ball over way too much. With me being a senior, I can just tell that this team is so much different than last year. We do not have a point guard out there so I am running point guard and it is not okay with me that my point guard is just sitting on the bench. We definitely need our point guards out there running the show and me and Tyra (White) need to knock down some shots. The run was just something careless on our behalf with the turnovers that we were having out there. We just need to do a better job of cleaning up on the offensive end. We were not getting it done on the defensive end, either.”
