K-State vs. Baylor Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Player and Coach Quotes

Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Opening Statement...
"Baylor is a very talented team. They gave us trouble right from the start. Getting the bucket at the start and everything from then when they went on a 23-0 run. We struggled at times, and we lacked energy and focus. There were a lot of things that were disappointing for me as a coach. I felt like we came back and had better intent in the second half. I felt like we did better in the second half. In that stand point, we were not as competitive in the first half as we were in the second half."

On getting out on the shooters...
"When you see people on the other team hit a three they go to the defense. We had three points and everyone is going, should we be out on the shooter. They average 90, so no our intent was for us to have an opportunity in this game, and we were going to have to make them hit a few threes and they hit 8-of-14 and that is a really high percentage for them. We did not feel like we matched up well at all in a high possession game and in a game that we were giving them gaps to the inside, we did not feel like we matched up really well. When you are facing a talented team, you have to pick your spots to gamble and unfortunately they shot well. Giving up 36 points made our issues offensive, and if we would have thrown up 25 or 26, we would have still been in the game and we were not able to do that."

On offense in the second half...
"I did not like it, because we gave them fouls to give, and we had break downs there. You cannot go 9-22 from the free throw line and give them plays like that. I felt like we played better offensively toward the end of the second half."

Guard Ashia Woods
On slow start...
"I agree with what he [Coach Mittie] is saying with it being a lack of focus and we kind of rushed things. When we had the opportunity to take a shot against Baylor, I feel like we just took the first one we got instead of working it around. With it packed in there, you throw turnovers and felt like that was part of it."

On Baylor's run...
"When they get those runs, in the moment it was hard to bounce back from, to gain focus and figure out what we need to do. Baylor is a great team, and we struggled with it."

Baylor Head Coach and Player Quotes
Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On how they were able to get a 23-0 run...
"When you play against a zone that is good and his (Jeff Mittie) zone defense is very good. They cut off angles. They lead the conference in steals playing a zone, so that tells you that it is outstanding. You are going to have to knock down some perimeter shots. I thought Kristy Wallace, in the first half, was just very good. We had ball reversal, and she had her feet set and knocked down some shots. In the second half, they started trapping her. She got in trouble and had turnovers, but it also allowed us to get more touches to Nina Davis. When she drew all the attention from the double team, we were allowed to get the ball down in the short corner, and Nina was able to go to work."

On K-State packing it in and forcing them to shoot outside...
"We will shoot it. We have some shooters. We are never going to be a team that relies on perimeter shooting. I do not think you win championships if you are one dimensional like that, but we have got perimeter players that if you leave them open they are going to let it fly. I thought Kristy obviously, Alexis Prince hit big shots. Imani (Wright) never really got on track throughout the game, but those three girls can shoot the perimeter ball. I thought rebounding was a key. We are going to give you one shot, and you better make it count. I just thought that we rebounded at all positions on the defensive end."

Guard Kristy Wallace
On K-State forcing them to make outside shots...
"They were playing a packed in zone. It was imperative that someone had to step up and stretch that zone up. It was lucky enough to be me today, but my team helped me out."

On their team not being one dimensional...
"That is the good thing about our team. When we cannot get it inside, we have shooters that can hit the three. When that is not going on, we can get it into Nina, K.K. (Khadijiah Cave), and Sune (Agbuke), and they can get it done."
