K-State vs. Kansas Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head Coach and Players Quotes

Head coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement…
“I think you would expect that kind of game in a rivalry like this. I thought it was a gutty performance by us. We really just kind of gritted out a win. Our second half defense was much better. Kansas was so good early. I thought they had a good rhythm to what they were doing. They had 11 assists early at one point in the game. We really had trouble with them in the first half. Second half, I thought we played extremely well and were very aggressive.”

On free throw shooting…
“I think we are getting better there. We are getting more confident. Our group is working hard to get better there. The break has allowed us to spend extra time on that. I think they have played with more confidence in that area.”

On the update for Haley Texada…
“She is getting a (CT) scan done right now. She was moving and talking and doing those things well. That is the only update that I have. I am going to go over there right after we get done here.”

Forward Breanna Lewis
On her night …
“I was struggling offensively so I tried to make up for it by playing good defense by getting blocks and steals or whatever I can.”

On school record for blocks…
“Honestly I did not know I had eight blocks until the end of the game, and I was really surprised. It feels good. I want to get more, but I just want to help my teammates out.”

Guard Shaelyn Martin
On how she played…
“At halftime he (Coach Mittie) told all of us to be more aggressive and cut loose. He gave me the confidence to go out and try to make some plays with it. With him trusting me, I was able to trust myself to be able to make some plays.”

Forward Ashia Woods
On free throw shooting…
“As the stats show, we have struggled at the line, myself mainly, but I feel like we stepped to the line with confidence knowing that this is a big game. It was the Sunflower Showdown, and we needed this win and it was a good win. We had a lot of players step up. Kindred (Wesemann) stepped up and went 6-6 and it was critical to make those free throws.”

On her pass turning into a made shot…
“I was surprised. I thought it was going out of bounds and then it went in. It threw me off but it still counts for two.”

Kansas Players and Coach Quotes
Head Coach Bonnie Henrickson
Opening Statement…
“Stop, turning the ball over – you have 23 turnovers when you are in the game on the road at the three minute mark. We are our own worst enemy right now. We just let it go. We got careless and lackadaisical. A few in there did a great job pressuring. We refer to those as self-inflicted, and we have to be better and more disciplined, attack and make the right decision. Currently, we have not done that. I am just shocked that we have struggled that much with taking care of the ball.”

On what K-State did to come back…
“Well think about it, we got three or four in a row, but we kept turning it over or did not get a look. We shot the ball poorly and did not get enough shots. Our effort to the offensive glass was better than it has been, so that is a positive. You have to win it on the defensive end, then, they started scoring on us one-on-one on the offensive glass. They started ripping drives and getting to the free throw line a little bit and the more they attacked and the more we did not counter that by being as aggressive on the offensive end. When you looked at it and we watched it, we played east west against the zone, we did not play north south. Natalie [Knight] drove the ball to the paint and dropped that to Caelynn [Manning-Allen] and I think that is the last time we got a ball in the paint and got a good look. We screened for Chelsea [Gardner] and she gets fouled and does not make it and other than that we played around the zone. We played east to west and often take it as playing catch back and forth. We knew going in we had to drive the ball below the free throw line. That was kind of the theory that we made a point of, but we did not get the ball there enough. When we did good - things happened, which is not enough.”

Guard Chayla Cheadle
On second half offense …
“We just stopped attacking in the paint. Like coach said we need to keep attacking. We were playing outside the zone.”

On losing first half lead…
“We know we ended up beating ourselves. We just need to come out with the same effort that we did in the first half.”

Forward Chelsea Gardner
On second half offense …
“I think we were not as aggressive as we were in the first half. Coach Bonnie [Henrickson] told us you have to beat your person, draw the next person and then kick it. We did not do enough of that.”
