Kansas State Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening Statement…
“It goes without saying how proud I am of our basketball team tonight, we played a great basketball team. It just feels so good for our players to rise up with such toughness and character. We have talked all year about competing in a 40 minute game; little did we know it would take 45 minutes to get this one back. I am just extremely proud of everyone on our roster and everyone who took the floor. This is just a great effort by a group of really tough minded competitors of Kansas State that made their mind up to win the game. We talked about that all year and tonight it just all came together. It is just very, very rewarding to see them have that kind of success.”

On breaking the three-point makes record…
“For a while it felt like we were setting the record for misses. In the second half you did not want to be near me on the sideline. I thought we were never going to make another three, which is just a reflection of ball movement, people staying aggressive, and looking to get the shot opportunities that we can best create to who we are. It was just tremendous to see Brittany (Chambers) rise up and make huge shots and Mariah White. Those two seniors refuse to lose. Heidi Brown came in off the bench, took it to the floor, and showed her strength of being a great shooter. Tonight just feels rewarding because you saw young people play to their strengths and not relent. We went through a real dry spell of shot making, went through a dry spell of scoring the ball and yet our kids know now how important it is to get stops, and mentally not giving into not making shots.”

On second half defense…
“So critical. We got up to that 10 and 11 point lead, and we had such a rush of emotion and momentum. That is classic Big 12 basketball and a great team, a top 15 team. They are going to run at you. They are not going to settle for that. I just absolutely loved our gutsy mentality on the defensive end. Our willingness to run to the ball, and create steals. I think our steal number tonight was really big in the end result. We really did not win the war on the boards, but we really worked for the boards. When you do not relent and make up your mind, you are going to continue to box out bigger and better athletes. In the end you get enough of those steals, you get enough of those stops when it really matters. Tonight our kids did not want to lose. It was really special.”

Senior Guard Brittany Chambers
On her defense in the second half…
“It was huge. We went through a huge wall in the second half scoring wise. When you go on a scoring wall, the difference that we showed tonight is that it does not matter, because you can make up for it any other way. We went up 10, as hot as we could be, but as cold as we could be. Players like Mariah (White) had seven steals tonight. She did not give Toni (Young) an inch, she is an All-Big XII first team player and Mariah is half her size. She caught the ball and Mariah got steal after steal. She did an absolutely amazing job on her tonight. It was just second chance efforts, diving on the floor and getting 16 steals, which is what kept us in the game.”

On second half defense…
“It feels unbelievable, a couple days ago we all kind of had the wind taken out of our sails for the day, not only because they are two great players, but we are a family and it takes a lot. It is unbelievable how close this team is. We could definitely put that under us and get our minds back in it. Today at shoot around we came in with our heads on ready to go and got good shots up. We took the court and did not back down. We played with that does not matter attitude. It has just been so great to play a team like Oklahoma State who is so great. We got the win and I think it feels even better because it was a hard fought game it was not perfect, it was not great, it was just nitty gritty to the end.”

Sophomore Guard Heidi Brown
On tonight’s game…
“I am excited for the win we got today. We deserved what we did, we played very well and we deserve this win.”

Oklahoma State Head Coach Quotes
Head Coach Jim Littell
Opening Statement …
“Give Kansas State credit. They played extremely well. They put on an unbelievable shooting performance from a lot of different people. They hit big shot after big shot. I thought our team did a nice job of getting back into it at the end of regulation. We turned the ball over when we had a chance to go ahead at the end of regulation. You cannot do that when you fight that far back. We started the overtime by missing some point-blank shots that you have to hit. We had some bad possessions coming out of the overtime. That is just a formula for getting beat on the road. They made 16 three’s, had four people in double-figure scoring and had another player with eight. They scored the ball very well, and you have to give them credit for that.”

On defending K-State’s three-point shooting…
“We were going to guard them man. To guard them, you have to contain the dribble-drive because everything they do is to spread the floor, put the ball on the floor, dribble-drive, make two play one and kick it out to the shooter. We did not stop the dribble-drive. That is what led to so many of the three’s. When (Brittany) Chambers came up from the high ball pick, we missed an assignment stepping out on a hard hitch and making her give the ball up. She got off on a huge roll with her first 11 points. You cannot miss assignments when there is a dangerous player like that. She made us pay for it.”

On Mariah White
“She hit three three’s on us. It was a who-is-who on big three’s. She hit big shots, but hurt us off of the dribble-drive as well. Where she was very special tonight, is the seven steals and five assists. I thought she played a complete game.”
