K-State vs. Texas Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head Coach and Players Quotes

Head coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement…
“Well it was another tough ball game.  I thought our team did some things well and continues to get better.  Tonight I think we had better balance offensively, which was one of the keys.  I thought we took care of the ball well and were able to get enough possessions in there.  In the second half it was critical that we executed well.  We had some opportunities to get to the free throw line and convert.  We shot well from the free throw line tonight, so all-in-all a pretty good game for us and obviously high points for us.  It was good to see [Kindred Wesemann] get hot.  It was great to see she had a great look early and she had a great look late.  Texas really did a good job getting after her.  We had trouble getting it to her in the half court on two critical plays, which would have given us the game with two quick kick outs off of offensive rebounds and off of a free throw tip.  Those two critical plays took it from 47-46 to 53-46 and obviously those are huge.”

On close wins…
“It did not feel like eleven, but it was nice at the end to not have to worry about the shot going in at the buzzer.  It was nice because we have had back to back games where shots were going to the rim as the buzzer is going off.  It was nice to see us step on the pedal when we got a chance to finish it.  When we got up by 12 we continued to make plays. [Kindred] Wesemann made a three and [Haley] Texada got a big layup.  We were aggressive on the fast break. We got it to [Breanna] Lewis and she scored late in the shot clock.  I thought that showed great poise.  I think Wesemann gave her the pass with three seconds on the shot clock and all of those are big dagger type plays.“

On free throws…
“Ashia [Woods] was great tonight from the free throw line.  She struggled in other areas, being only 2-12 from the field. But she was really good from the free throw line tonight. That gives you some options down the stretch because when you get to the end you want your best free throw shooters on the court.  One of the reasons I like having Ashia on the court is that she is such a valuable player.  She can play any position on the floor.  When she knocks those free throws down, it makes it hard for the other team.”

Guard Kindred Wesemann
On career high ...
“I really do not know. My teammates got me the ball I had some great open looks because they created the looks for me.  I just needed to knock them down but it is about time I think.”

On confidence coming into the game…
“I came really early to stretch and stuff.  I remember telling coach [Brian] Ostermann’s wife that I was feeling it today.  She said ok well I hope I can get there.  I just came in with a mindset that I was going to do great and I guess that I have been ok.”

Forward Breanna Lewis
On playing against a tough defense…
“I knew I was going to be playing someone who would challenge me.  Coming in I knew I would have to work harder on offense, so that is what I did this game.

Texas Head Coach Quotes
Head Coach Karen Aston
Opening statement…
“I think obviously our team is really struggling on the offensive end. It is beginning to carry over to our lack of, I do not want to say energy, but attention to detail and focus on the defensive end. I thought Kansas State did a terrific job of stretching the floor against us, and obviously (Kindred) Wesemann was terrific. It is like we did not quite know she could shoot, but I promise you that we did. Credit to them, they played really well today.”

On the slow play in the second half…
“I think part of it was that we started fouling a little more. In the first half, nobody shot free throws at all, so obviously they shot 23 free throws in the second half. That slowed the pace of the game because we fouled. Credit to them that they put their heads down and challenged us defensively, but we did not get as many stops. There were some huge plays, and I thought the play where we went to sleep and gave Breanna Lewis the layup with the shot clock going off. I thought the tap-outs on the missed free throws were huge. Those are simple plays that you have to execute, and we did not do that.”
