K-State vs. West Virginia Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head Coach and Players Quotes

Head coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement...
"I think it was just a gutty performance. We struggled all night offensively. I think that is a credit to West Virginia's pressure. For the first 25-30 minutes they forced us into a lot of bad decisions and bad shots. I think, ironically, as we competed harder we made better decisions and found some better open looks in the second half. Of course the key was getting to the free throw line and knocking them down. That was the best we have shot all year. [Haley] Texada was huge in that stretch. She really had to fight through some fatigue. She was certainly using a lot of energy to get to spots on the floor and draw fouls. All in all it was just a gutty performance."

On defense in the second half...
"We switched defenses a couple of times and we got a little more active and aggressive. I thought [Breanna] Lewis was a factor in the second half. She had a real rough first half offensively. I thought it took some energy out of her. She just did not have any energy in the first half. In the second half I thought she came out and really gave us a lift. We went small to start the half and that did not work as well, but in stretches the small lineup gave us some good looks."

On beating West Virginia for the first time...
"This was a game that we had talked to the group about - that West Virginia, if you pull up Bracketology, is in the tournament according to that. That is just a projection, but we are one of the teams that is being talked about. We are one of 10 or 12 teams being talked about and we know that we are on the outside right now. We know that we have to do more, but I wanted to see how our group would respond in this kind of game. We certainly struggled in big stretches in this game, but I sure liked our effort."

Senior Haley Texada
On winning her last game in Bramlage...
"It was awesome. I enjoyed every second of it no matter how tired I was at one point. The girls really did fight hard and they knew how much it meant. They just went harder because of that. It was awesome."

On beating West Virginia for the first time...
"I did not know that actually. Like I said, they are a good team. Obviously they are aggressive. We just had to get tough tonight and fight through that."

Senior Ashia Woods
On winning on Senior Night...
"It was definitely good especially with how hard we fought as a team. I mean, that is one of the best ways to go out. It was fun. We had stretches we played bad, but I felt Haley taking it to the hoop and getting fouled brought a lot of energy to us. And it was a great atmosphere today."
