Kansas State Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Opening Statement...
"We got off to a great start. You do not always know off of a long layoff what kind of start you are going to get as a team. We did have a great start, certainly had our legs under us, and had great energy. I thought we played a little hurried at times, but it is not as problematic when the ball is going in we can mask it. We had good energy and [Haley] Texada had a fantastic night. I felt like coming in to this game we needed to get to the free throw line and we did. I am very pleased with our aggressiveness, and we have some things that we need to get better on and carry on to the next game. I think our defense was very good for most of the night. We were kind of all over the place, so we have to shore some things up there.

On offensive play...
"We made shots and we made it look good. I cannot say that I was ecstatic with things like transition defense and things like that. We were pretty amped up to play and we kind of had trouble making sure they were focused, because they were pretty excited to play tonight."

On Ashley Jones' play...
"She had a pretty good week of practice. With [Breanna] Lewis getting in to foul trouble, it was one of those things that she had a good week of work here, and sure enough she came in and made buckets. It was a good night."

On playing Missouri...
"Yeah, it is a great match up. It is a Big Eight match up and a lot of people remember a ton of games. I grew up in Big Eight country, so I watched all those games. It will be a great match up. They are very similar to this Akron team with their ability to score from three. They can really stretch your defense, so we are really going to have our hands full. I did not like us allowing 22 to get 14 points."

Guard Haley Texada
On guarding the three point shooters...
"Oh, no we looked at scout yesterday. We were in film and that was our emphasis, and we knew 22 was a shooter and we needed to get on her. We let her get off a couple, but other than that we did it right."

On her play...
"It was falling and it was good. My teammates helped me get open shots and we were just going pretty hard, like coach said we had a lot of energy and we were moving. That is always good, but it helped create openings."

On post season...
"A lot is on the line it is post season and it is win or go home at this point. If you are not locked in and ready to go anyone could come in here and win and send you home and we do not want that."

Guard Shaelyn Martin
On doing what the team needs...
"Yeah, it is game to game, it just depends on what coach needs me to do. If he needs me to focus on rebounding I will do that, but it really depends on what my teammates need me to do at that time."

Guard Bri Craig
On hosting games...
"I think it is a big deal, especially if we continue to win and get that home crowd and getting more people to come out and support us. It is a big deal in a long stretch."

Akron Head Coach Quotes

Head Jodi Kest
Opening Statement...
"I am disappointed with how we played today. In the beginning we made too many mental mistakes. You would have thought we got off the bus this morning, and never saw a video tape of Kansas State. I thought my assistants did a good job of preparing our kids, but maybe in the beginning we were a little bit nervous. I am not sure. We allowed their three point shooters to get open. We allowed the non shooters to fake and drive on us. We allowed people that we know cannot go left to go right. We just did a lot of poor things tonight. Give Kansas State credit, he [Jeff Mittie] has done a terrific job with this team."

On Haley Texada's play...
"She was fantastic. The game plan with her was to make her put the ball down and not allow her to shoot the three, where she was 4-7. She is a very explosive kid. She played like a senior is supposed to play. She did not want to lose tonight, I watched her warm up, and she just had that look on her face that I know she was going to come out ready to play."

On Breanna Lewis' play...
"The game plan was with her was if she got the ball we were going to double her, especially when they send the guard through. When we did it, it was effective. When we did not do it, it was not effective. We made a lot of mental mistakes."
