Oklahoma City vs. Kansas State
Kansas State Player and Coach Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening Statement…
“I really appreciate the opportunity to have a game against an opponent with this kind of athleticism and aggressiveness. They are just so well coached, and it is great to have Coach (Rob) Edmisson and Claire Coggins on that other sideline. We knew we were going to line up against a team that would challenge us, and it was definitely a great opener for us. It is really a game where I look at it see the possibilities for us to get better. We were a little shaky on the offensive end in the first half, but we are always early. We played a lot of people, but we are obvioiusly a long way from having the rhythm that we want. Tonight was a great starting point for us against a team that plays extremely hard and smart.”

On potential areas of improvement…

“First off I think you are trying to identify the focus level and the intensity at which your new players are competing during possessions. We have a long rope were we can improve especially with our new players in the gym. We need to understand the speed of the game, accountability and assignments on the defensive end. I felt we were weak tonight in our help defense, and in our one-on-one matchups, we allowed a lot of penetration to the rim.  There were just all kinds of situations that we had an opportunity to test tonight and that we will be able to take back to the film room and really teach and improve upon.”

On tonight’s shooting…
“I think the shooting is a lot because we are so young right now. We have a lot of new players in the gym, who do not have a lot of familiarity with the offense, understanding what they want to get out of a possession and what the coaches want out of the possession. It stands very clear that we have to become a better shooting team. We have said it all along that that is going to be what determines our success this year. I thought we got a lot of open shots tonight, but we did not make many.”

On Claire Coggins coaching Oklahoma City…
“I just felt really wonderful. There was a huge sense of pride and respect for how Claire (Coggins) has worked to obtain the possession she now holds at Oklahoma City University. She has worked extremely hard and did a great job at Connors Junior College. I think she will be a very big part of Oklahoma City’s success not just on the season, but moving forward as well. She is a great young assistant. She knows the game. She is an extremely confident teacher and an excellent recruiter. “

Senior Forward Jalana Childs
On her thoughts of the first game…
“I think it was a display of how young we are and how early it is. We have a lot of talent on our team and with this being our first game I think our younger players, I don’t want to say we were not ready, they are just getting their feet wet, they aren’t use to it. I am looking forward to the rest of the season, we can learn a lot from this game on film and I am not worried at all, I think our team works hard in practice and I think we can build off of this game.”

On how she felt tonight…
“I felt good, it was good to get a feel for the court again, because I know the last few games of the season last year I was just not me, I couldn’t move, but I think I still have a lot to build off of. This game was not anything near what I can do, what I can really do. I think I came out with a lot of energy, I was just really happy to be out on the court.”

Junior Guard Brittany Chambers
On her thoughts of the first game…
“I just think that it is early in the season and I think coach (Deb Patterson) said it well when we were in the locker room that shots come from rhythm and that earlier in the season you tend to think a little bit more and the rhythm might not be on. So of course we want to improve on those numbers, but it is our first game so we understand that. ”
