Kansas State Head Coach Quotes
Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement…
“I was proud of the last 3:45. We have to learn to win those games, and those are real easy to lose. In that last 3:45, I thought we had a good look and positive energy in the timeout. They were all connected. This is a very new team to me, and a very new team really to each other. You have two sophomores and a freshman up here on the stage with me. We have got some youth that we have to fight through, but they had a good look to them. Emporia did some really good stuff to us, which is really good for us to have to battle through. We struggled all night offensively. We had some easy plays that we just could not make, but we will take it. We will take a look at the film and get better tomorrow.”

On making clutch free throws at the end…
“I thought they relaxed a little bit. We have to be better at the free throw line, and we know that. They were real big free throws at the end, and those are obviously winning plays. We had some winning plays at the end.”

On who stepped into a leadership role during tonight’s game…
“I thought Kindred (Wesemann) had a real good look to her. I thought they were all connected, though. I thought they all had good body language to the bench. I thought Shae (Shaelyn Martin) had a great look. Lou (Breanna Lewis) was flying around late. We just have to get that sense of urgency earlier in the game. We went the first 12 minutes of the game with zero deflections. I did not like our energy. I thought we played safe there. Offensively, I thought we got frustrated and that affected our energy on the defensive end. I thought our leadership from (Haley) Texada and Kindred (Wesemann) was good at the end of the game.”

On scoring and rebounding throughout the game…
“I did not like either of those two things early in this game. I thought we were getting pushed around early in the game. ”

Kansas State Player Quotes

Freshman Guard Shaelyn Martin
On first college performance…
“I actually felt pretty secure. I have developed a great bond with my teammates. I did not feel like I had any pressure. We know how to take care of one another as a team and the older girls led me through it till the end.”

On the atmosphere of the game…
“Growing up I went to a lot of K-State games, but being on the court this time instead of being in the stands was different. During the game you block out everything around you and it is just your teammates and you on the court.”

Sophomore Forward Breanna Lewis
On comfort as the game progressed…
“At the beginning of the game I felt a little bit of frustration from missing a few early shots. I just tried to clear my head as the game went on and start over each time and started playing better towards the end.”

Sophomore Guard Kindred Wesemann
On plan for the last play of the game…
“Not really. I just saw her (Breanna Lewis) open and had to make the play.”

On final big play reaction…
“I do not know if you guys saw my reaction, but it was pretty intense. I almost fell over. It was just a great read by Ashia (Woods) to get to Lou (Breanna Lewis) to make the strong finish. She did very well today and it was a great basket.”

Emporia State Head Coach Quotes
Head Coach Jory Collins
On their play against K-State…
“All we talked about was coming in and just wanting to compete every possession. We were not real sure what they were going to do offensively. We were switching some things to try and give ourselves a chance to keep people in front of us. They have really good players, and there are going to be times where you do the right thing and it just is not good enough. That happened too many times tonight for us to win the game.”

On how the offense played…
“It is early in the year for us. We do not play a 2-3 zone so we do not practice against it very much. I know Coach Mittie played 2-3 at TCU last year, and we were anticipating them playing a zone. We really only worked against zone the last two days. It is not something that you get played against in our league. I knew it was going to be a struggle for us to score points, and I was encouraging our guards at the top, whom are good shooters, to maybe take some that they normally would not. It was better than turning the ball over, at least getting one up on the rim and chase it. I was encouraging them to take as many shots as possible.”
