Fort Hays State at Kansas State

Kansas State Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson

Opening Statement…

“I think that for an opening game it was great to have the opportunity to play everyone the minutes that they had the opportunity to play. I think for the young players it is great just to be able to get a feel for what it is like to be out on the floor, competing and being able to execute on positions where things really matter. For us I think that this was a great starting point and I am pleased with our effort.”

On defense in the first half…

“Yes, I think that we did a great job just on playing the concepts that we have been working on. I think that we were accountable on the defensive end throughout the course of the game, not just collectively but individually. We are going to have breakdowns, but if we can build off some of the habits that we established early here in practices and here tonight it is going to give us a chance most nights. Obviously, Fort Hays State they have a different athletic dimension than many of the teams that we will line up against. Right now, where we are at, I was pleased.”

On the scoring balance of the team…

“I think that it can potentially be a positive for us this year. We have got to continue to establish some kind of depth. I hope that we are not a team that thinks we have to be perfect every possession up the floor and that we might have some versatile scorers. I think tonight we began to establish a willingness across the board to take shots. It all starts there, not passing up opportunities to be effective scorers and tonight we did that. We are not necessarily going to make a high percentage of our shots every night when you are a young team. But you have to have that aggressiveness and willingness to take those shots and I think tonight, we established that we have that mentality.”

On the play of guard Brittany Chambers…

“We had great assists numbers from Brittany (Chambers) tonight. The assist to turnover ratio is always significant. I think that defensively Fort Hays State was not able to bring that athleticism on the ball that we may see as we move forward but it is still great to see us taking care of the ball and finding our teammates. I think that this is something for her to build off of and for all of us to build off of.”

Forward Jalana Childs

On the play of Brianna Kulas…

“I thought she was bomb. She did really well. I did not really expect her to shoot as well as she did tonight. I did not know what to expect but I am as pleased as coach is with her play. She is going to be a great asset to our team and I am excited to continue to play with her.”

On the inside-outside game…

“I thought that we played pretty well. That is something that I like to work on when I am getting doubled. Sometimes I do not pass it out and that is an issue. Tonight I felt like all of our post players did a good job of passing it back out to open shooters. If we can continue to get open looks outside we are going to great.”

Guard Brittany Chambers

On development of her passing game…

“Coming in here I was more of a scoring point guard so lately I have been trying to develop more of a passing game so that is what we have been working on. I think it is something that I have really had to work on and I could not ask for two better coaches in the gym with me. They are always showing me angles in passing and working on seeing the whole floor, seeing things before they happen. I am really blessed to have both of them on the court with me.”

On opening up the offense…

“I think that people will come out on me more so if I can get it into our posts and open up things for our other guards as well as myself. It will also give us an inside presence that we did not establish last year.”

Guard Taelor Karr

On a more up tempo offense this year…

“We are definitely a much more athletic team this year. We have been putting a lot of emphasis on that in practice. We want to make the game up tempo and push it because we know we can score and get some easy baskets off of that. Our point guards are looking up court and everyone is running.”

On Mariah White…

“The thing about Mariah (White) is that she is a pass first point guard. She has a great handle and is a great passer so you never know with her, you always have to have your hands up ready for passes. It is great knowing that you are going to run and get rewarded by it with her.”

FHSU Quotes

Head Coach Tony Hobson

On what positives he can take away from tonight’s game…

“Well right now, I’m not sure. I have not figured out any positives right now. First of all, you have got to give K-State credit. They came out and played hard. They shot the ball extremely well. We could not get our first three or four shots to drop and we turned it over a couple of times and the roof just kind of caved in from there. But this type of situation is not a total loss if we learn something from it. We were just talking in the locker room, that there are some basic things, little basketball things that we just were not taking care of. For example, on the first shot of the game, we do not box-out their post player who is outside of the three-point line and she comes around us and lays it up. That happened a bunch to tonight. That is just a basic basketball play. You have to box out. We did not communicate over any screens and there was confusion on some of the plays on defense. So either they hit a three-pointer or got a roll to the basket. So there are a couple things we really need to work on. You cannot come in and expect to compete with someone like K-State if you do not do all the little things really well. But for whatever reason, we did not play as well as we are capable of tonight and part of that is their defense. I thought they defended us really well. They have got a really strong backcourt. Their guards have good quickness, they are smart, and they can really shoot the ball. They are a tough matchup. We just have to pick ourselves up and take away what we can from this and if nothing else, it will give me a lot of practice fodder. We have just got to try and learn from this. ”

On playing in Bramlage Coliseum…
“You usually play better in situations like this. You are more excited and you tend to play harder. But we got off to such a rotten start and it kind of sucked the air out of us. But we play in arena in Hays that seats 7,000 and we averaged 2,400 fans last year, so we are kind of used to it. But playing here is a good experience for us and if we would have played a little better, it would have been a lot better of an experience for us. It is a fun situation for us. A lot of our players know some of their players, from playing with or against them in high school. It is a good deal and I really appreciate Coach Patterson for having us in because they could have had any in here to play an exhibition game. I just really appreciate it.”
