Kansas State Player and Coach Quotes
Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening Statement…
“That was a tremendous play at the end of the game. Washburn played extremely well, and it took every second of that basketball game for us to find a way to win. On the offensive end of the floor, I was extremely impressed with their fight. They dominated us on the boards, and that is an area that we have to improve on immediately. Tonight marks two games in a row where we have not done what we have needed to on the boards. We also have got to find a way to get scoring from more than two positions on the floor. So  those are just some of things that we will work hard to address.”

On  play from the bench…
“I do feel good about the fact that we had had good quality play in the second half from our bench. Chantay Caron did a good job within her minutes as did JulilAnne Chisholm. When we had Emma Ostermann out there, I thought she did what we needed her to do to keep us in the game. I also thought the minutes that Tasha Dickey got and her aggressiveness on the defensive end is something good we can build on.

"But really when I look at the positives in this game, it is more related to the individuals rather than us as a whole. I appreciated the toughness that Brandy (Brown) and Mariah (White) brought to that last possession. That was great execution of a basketball play. Brittany (Chambers) stepped up late. You have to make plays when you are playing at a level that you have struggled at most of the game. You still have to have the courage to step up and make big plays late in the game. “

On  making a comeback…
“We definitely were in a legitimate hole. We were on the backside of the momentum tonight and that is when a little bit of experience rose up and helped us. Mariah (White) got a couple of critical steals. I thought our guards did a good job of keeping us in whatever semblance of an offense we had tonight.”

On improving in these next weeks…
“Both of these games really challenged us in different ways, and I could not be more pleased with where we are at today considering how challenging these games have been. These games tested us and put us in positions were we were uncomfortable. We played a lot of poor minutes of basketball in these last two games, and we still found ways to improve enough over the 40 minutes to get a win. So to that extent, I have had every bit I can handle, but you cannot say enough about Washburn’s performance tonight. I think we have an indication of where we need to continue to improve every day.”

Junior Guard Brittany Chambers
On what she takes away from the two exhibition games…
“I think, like Coach Patterson said, both of these teams in exhibition have tested us in different ways, and I think that if anything, it showed that there are things that we can improve on. Both teams, credit to them, came out and came at us and really pushed us, which is a good thing. It is one of those things where we know what we did not succeed in both games, we know what we need to improve on and that is what this week is going to be about and as we go forward.”

On being ready to start the regular season…
“We are excited. We are also excited to have a week to get there, though. We are excited to get back in the gym tomorrow.”

Senior Forward Jalana Childs
On Kansas State’s defense in the two exhibition games…
“I think that our defense has been pretty decent. I definitely love Tasha Dickey staying in the passing lanes. I think that she has really shown that she can be good for us on the defensive end. There are still things that we have to adjust to. We are definitely not perfect. I think we still have to just work and make defense a habit. I think we are going to work hard. Those two games were definitely a huge challenge for us.”

Washburn Quotes
Head Coach Ron McHenry Quotes
On a moral victory…
“We had our chances, and we fought hard. We just had a couple of possessions where we needed to get a basket or get a rebound and make a strong move, and we did and give Kansas State credit they were down at home in a pretty tough situation and they fought their way out of it with just playing hard basketball. They really came out and beat us on the boards for the last four minutes and did some things that they needed to do to win a game. They are a pretty good basketball team. They did not play as well as they wanted to. I am not sure that we had anything to do with it, but we had the game on the line and they made a pretty good play on it. They looked like a team that has played together before.”

On Brittany Chambers last possession…
“We did not rebound it very well, and we out rebounded them but we did not at the very end where it counts. We had a couple of offensive possessions where we just did not get the look that exactly we wanted or it got tipped or blocked. We had our chances and that is what the girls are disappointed about. They had a chance to win the game, and you do not always get that opportunity. No matter how you look at it, we lost and they won. That is what you play the game for.”

On their start in the second half…
“We had a horrible ending to the first half where we got it back to a tie at 24, but then we fell asleep a little bit and we got down 24 to 28. So all of a sudden that is a pretty big jump with a minute to go. So that was disappointing, but we came out in the second half and got going again. Sometimes in the second half they would make adjustments and we would be happy that we were just kind of close to them, but at times we let them get away from us. I liked the way the girls competed in the second half, and we got a pretty good lead. We just could not quite hit all of our shots or get the rebounds that we needed to get to win the game.”
