Newman vs. K-State Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Jeff Mittie

Opening statement…
“There were some improvements from last game and that was what we were looking for. I thought we were cleaner with the basketball than we were last time. Defensively I thought we flew around earlier in this game, and got us some easy opportunities early. I think for the most part, even though we had moments of lapses, I think we corrected ourselves quickly and got back to decent execution.”

On getting out to a lead…
“I think for us it was important to find a rhythm offensively. It seemed like we found a good rhythm. We had good shot selection in that stretch. I thought we had everyone involved in the game. I thought (Haley) Texada had a great start, and we were able to go down low to (Breanna) Lewis. I thought everyone in that first group played well at the start of the game. I think something that was helpful was that we got everyone involved early in the game. You are more relaxed when you are involved.”

On defense during the big runs…
“Yeah, I thought we got a lot of deflections in that stretch, and I thought we contested a lot of their shots. I have said from the beginning that we can be a pretty good defensive team. They continue to get better. Newman was getting some touches there around the free throw line, while they were not successful that could hurt our defense. They did a great job after that, and Newman did not get very many more touches. I think this team continues to take strides.”

On how the defense affects the offense…
“Coach Mittie stresses that all the time. Work hard on defense, and offense will take care of itself. That is one thing we have to have practiced is our defense, and coming out strong and aggressive with a lot of effort and execution. It is tough getting around there, but when we do it and all pull together, it really comes through together really well.”

On looking forward to the season opener on Friday…
“Every game matters and that is just something our team has to get and realize. Even though it is a season opener, we will not come in with a different mindset. We will come in like we did tonight and go get ready to be aggressive.”

Sophomore guard Kindred Wesemann
On the fast breaks throughout the game…
“Fast breaks are fun. Nobody wants to stand down there and go through sets for an offensive play if you can just run and do layups all the time. I think Haley and I had a few of those this game so just get deflections and everybody has got it out.”

On how the defense played tonight…
“I feel like we made really good strides tonight on defense. I do not think we are anywhere near where we could be because I think we could still do a whole lot better. Tonight was great and we did really good on defense.”

On playing a higher level of competition…
“K-State plays a zone defense with a lot of size that we probably will not see in our Division II schedule, but we have now seen two different styles of play with the previous Wichita State scrimmage. So this will do us a lot of good.”

On team’s bright spots…
“We had a four minute stretch in the second half where we played better offensively. We got the ball inside and were able to reverse it around. Defensively this was a chance for us to work on our zone where we able to match-up better.”
