Kansas State Player and Coach Quotes
Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening Statement...
"I thought we got a really good game today out of Jalana Childs. It was terrific to see, with her going 8-for-9 playing a good chunk of minutes, it was significant for her coming into this next match against either Marist or St. John's. She continues to assert herself and I liked the coast-to-coast play. I thought she worked extremely hard over the course of her minutes, she played and competed consistently. I thought the guard-play today was not necessarily where it needed to be or where we are going to need it to be. I thought we had really good scoring in the second half from Brittany Chambers. We have to take care of the ball better than we did today."

On the guards' play in the second half...
"I thought her assertiveness in the second half and her awareness to score was real big and I thought there was a period of time there where the connection between her, Taelor Karr, and Mariah White was what we needed it to be. I thought Mariah during the course of the game after about the first 5 minutes of the game brought a real consistent intensity and you can see that the combination that her and Brittany bring to the floor has the potential to make those two very hard to guard. Brittany obviously has the ability to score inside and out. Mariah had an aggressive disposition today, a nice passing game and I was also impressed with one second left on the clock, with the catch and let it go. It's not just the fact that the shot went in, it's the fact that she got aggressive. She is usually timid about whether to shoot or not. I think she is beginning to assert herself and I think she makes a great difference for us defensively. I just noticed at the beginning of the second half that Brittany was very big for us in getting us off track in respect to establish inside outside scoring, there were some pretty good assists there from both Mariah and Brittany there."

On the team's play today...
"I thought Grambling State did a good job of playing hard and just playing well. I don't think what they did was exceptional, with the exception that they worked harder than us on any given catch and on any given pass. Defensively, I felt like they really worked harder than we worked on the offensive end. If it didn't come easy for too much of the game as it related to our passing, in particular half court post passing, we were unsuccessful if it wasn't too easy and it's never going to be easy. Our turnover numbers today indicate that. So a lesson learned I hope. They definitely played harder on the defensive end of the floor than we were willing to match fundamentally."

Sophomore guard Brittany Chambers
On her second half play...
"I just felt coming into it, coach gave us just a quick speech at halftime it really wasn't a lot said just basically that our energy was not there. It wasn't, it was just terrible in the first half. I think the scoring came when we had Mariah running the court, we had Taelor running the court and it gave me opportunities to get open. Because we were working that much harder and I think when we are a team and we are all working hard and all working together things just start to click and I think you are going to start seeing that. I think that it's our goal to make that a 40-minute thing and not a 20-minute thing."

Junior forward Jalana Childs
On shooting the ball well...
"I think I was blocked at the end of the game. I felt like I really had to assert myself this game, I mean it's our first official game. The start did not help us, for me mentally it did not help. If I would have shot terrible today I would have been angry. I think I showed a little bit of anger. It really wasn't anger, it was more intensity and it picked up this game."

Sophomore guard Mariah White
On fast tempo offense...
"When I push the ball or when someone else pushes the ball it helps our team, it helps us in the offense, it helps us get back in the defense much easier. When we walk it up we are trying to catch the defense off guard."

Grambling State Coach Quotes
Head Coach Donnita Rogers
On playing Kansas State in the Commerce Bank Classic...
"I really believe despite how we played in the first half, that we are way ahead of where we were last year. We have not had the chance to play in a scrimmage or an exhibition game this year. This was our first time out of the gates. Some things went wrong like with our uniforms not getting here. We got a little ways to go but I'm proud of our effort. We will go back and watch some film and I'm really anxious to see how we gathered ourselves and hopefully we will play better tomorrow. "

On positives from this game...
"Well I had a freshman and a transfer student that got to play today. It's all about getting your nerves out and getting that first game out of the way. I don't think we shot as well as we could but I think we are executing our plays pretty good. We don't want to shoot that poorly every night. Number 33 (Jalana Childs) for K-State is very tough to stop we have to go back and see what we could have done. She is probably one of the best post players that we will play, she will be a tremendous asset in making us better at post defense."
