K-State vs. SIUE Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Jeff Mittie

Opening statement...
"I thought it was a decent start. There were some things early in the game, some deflections, we got some easy run outs, and that kind of got us going. Our offense really started with the defense. As we got going, I thought our inside game was critical. If you combine our inside group they were 20-33 from the field. They were very efficient. We got lifts from people off the bench. Ashley Jones came in and gave us a lift. (Jessica) Sheble and Erica Young came in and gave us a lift. We subbed, particularly on the front line, and not have any drop off and that is critical because we did have some foul trouble. We had some people that picked up two and three fouls early and that was good to be able to go to the bench and have quality production."

On getting first win...
"It feels good. I think every year the first one there is always a lot of anxiety. It is a double header so we want to show our fans that we play hard and play the right way. You know with a double header there is going to be fans coming during the game. I told them at halftime that we are going to have a whole new set of fans here by the time the second half starts. Let's play hard. Let's play well."

On concerns at the free throw line...
"Yeah it concerns me because we know we need to do as well as we can. It is not from lack of work by our group, they are working hard at it. It is going to take some time to change that. If you look at the progress, Lewis goes 3-4 tonight and Erica Young goes 4-4. These are two players that struggled a year ago shooting, so that is progress. Ashia (Woods) was in there Wednesday night for 45 minutes shooting them so those things will come around. Yes it concerns me because we are going to have to make free throws to win close games."

On offensive performance...
"In the second half I came out and hit a shot and then I got the ball and had the opportunity to shoot another one. I was feeling it so I just took the opportunities when I got the ball."

SIUE Head Coach Paula Buscher Quotes
On team's performance...
"I was disappointed. I thought we needed to be a lot more competitive. In the first half I liked our defense, I thought it was solid. We turned the ball over too many times in the first half, it was 15 points off of our fast breaks and 11 points off of our turnovers. I thought second half we handled the ball a little bit better, but then our defense dropped off. We need to play it harder on both ends. We did not shoot the ball well today for us and that just played right into K-State's hands. We have got to work on continuing to compete for 40 minutes."

On game highlights...
"I thought Regan played really good defense in the first half and took care of things close to the basket. Obviously, we want a little more, but I thought she did a nice job there. I thought our rebounding was better and that's all I can say about positives. I don't think we played well and we have to get a lot better from here. We are not satisfied at all today with our performance. We are a much better team and we need to show it."
