K-State vs. UMKC Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head Coach and Player Quotes

Head coach Jeff Mittie

Opening statement…
“It took us a while to get going, particularly at the offensive end. It just seemed like a little sluggish early, a lot of turnovers early in this one. Erica (Young) gave us a big lift off the bench. I think our group continued to play better as the game went on. What I did like was our defense. We were playing pretty solid defense the entire game. We were not giving them anything easy. Our offense caught fire in the second half. I liked some things we saw in the second half.”

On reason for starting out slow on offense…
“We were getting the post touches we wanted. Bre (Lewis) struggled a little bit with the crowd around her. I did not like our spacing on our cuts, and I think our timing was off early in this game. She had four turnovers right away in the game early.”

On finding room in the paint to score…
“I thought it was crowded in there. Everyone across the country is working through things right now. We want our posts to be aggressive on an angle pass, and we want our posts to be passers on a direct pass. Sometimes we get an angle pass and we are not going right away and sometimes we are getting a direct pass. We were a little bit out of sync early in this game.”

Sophomore Forward Breanna Lewis
On finding room in the paint to score…
“I thought it was just me having patience and letting guards go through and me finding my shot instead of just rushing into it. “

On how blocking a shot can help on the offensive end…
“I think it feels good because when you are struggling on offense, defensively it can make up for it. It feels good when you get a block.”

Sophomore Forward Erica Young
On what she brings to the team…
“I focus on two things and that is rebounding and getting better at defense. I am playing the four now and that is kind of hard. I am getting there. I feel I can do a lot with Coach Mittie because I can do whatever I want as long as it is rebounding and defense.”

UMKC Head Coach Quotes
Head coach Marsha Frese
On team improvements going forward...
“We just had a difficult time with their size, obviously. We just need to do a better job sharing the basketball. Getting the ball inside, past the defenses, and be willing to kick those passes out. We just need to find the players on the perimeter.”

On bright spots in the game…
“For us we are such a young team, and any time you come in to an environment like this one it is going to be important for our success in the future. This is a lot like how the conference championship will look. Facing bigger teams, on a bigger stage, and there is always room to improve. We have room to find success as the season moves forward.”
