Western Illinois at Kansas State
Kansas State Head Coach and Player Quotes

Head Coach Deb Patterson
Opening Statement…
“We are happy to be 4-0. This was another game against an opponent that gave us the opportunity to see some things about ourselves that we have to continue to work on and build off of. I am really pleased with our non-conference slate because it puts us in the position to learn a lot of lessons and I think Western Illinois did that for us today. As you can see we were not effective in the post game today with respect to our turnover numbers. I do not think that we got a good rhythm going, so there are a lot of things that we can take from this game and build off of in a game where we still got a win. To be 4-0 makes me extremely happy at this point in the season.”

On high turnovers…
“There was so much paralysis and thinking and not really being as reactive that we are capable of being.  We worked a lot on our offense over the course of the week and I think that we were sort of paralyzed and put a little too much emphasis on that in some ways. I think we had players thinking as opposed to them playing.”

On Sadie Webb…
“We really just approached this game with no one individual in-mind and just very committed to the overall scout and the overall approach that Western Illinois likes to bring to the floor. I think that we did a nice job with her. She probably was not making any shots tonight which works for us.”

On flow of the game…
“I felt like that we did not establish any type of rhythm and were not in any kind of flow. The other night I thought that our flow was more disruptive on the perimeter and tonight felt like our flow was disruptive relative to our inside game. They never really got comfortable in this game. Last game that we played I felt like our guards never really got comfortable.”

Junior forward Jalana Childs
On the large lead that quickly evaporated in the second half…
“I think it is frustrating for any defense. We have to keep our heads in the game and worry about what we need to do. We probably had some bone head moves. I know I made some. These are things we need to fix. It is a learning process. We need to focus on getting better and learning from our mistakes.”

On going on the road next after playing the first four games of the season at home…
“We need to stay focused. We need to be more physical and aggressive as a whole. We need to learn how to play on the road facing adversity. It is just part of the game.”

Sophomore guard Brittany Chambers
On the team’s struggles behind the three-point line…
“I think we just need to take open shots when we have them. A lot of players, if they miss one or two, are not willing to take another one. We have some great three point shooters on this team. We need to build confidence to take shots when they are open and not hesitate.”

On her confidence to continue to take shots…
“I think it is just me having the experience last year. I had the opportunities to learn a lot and this year we have a lot of new players who have not had this experience. I think it is going to come especially for a player like Taelor Karr who has not been as effective from the three point line as she can be. In my opinion, she is the best three point shooter on our team and we need her to keep taking shots when she is open.”

Western Illinois Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Leslie Crane
Opening Statement …
“I thought that we did very well, we competed very hard. I felt like tonight we played for 20 minutes. We played well for the first 10 minutes of the game, and then we went brain-dead for the second ten minutes of the half. We came out in the second half, and we were still brain-dead, but then the last 10 minutes of the game we played well. We out-rebounded a Big 12 team today, they had 19 turnovers and we had 20, so that was pretty much the same. We were 50 percent from the 3-point line, but we missed some close ones around the bucket that I would have liked to have had. We did not concentrate enough at the free throw line, and that is a big thing when they 19-of-26 and we go 9-of-18. To be within 10 points of K-State is very good, though.”

On the Leathernecks’s offensive struggles…
“Obviously, as a coaching staff, we have got to go back and re-tool some offense. Right now, some things that we thought would work aren’t, so we have got some time now to look at some different things that we are doing. We are just going to have to look at this as a coaching staff to see what is going on, and then we have to make adjustments.”

On their late surge to cut the deficit…
“I thought that we did some nice things defensively. We got some very big rebounds that made a huge difference in allowing us to get some scoring opportunities. We were able to put some pressure on them in the backcourt to kind of frustrate them.”
