K-State vs. UT Arlington Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head Coach and Player Quotes

Head coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement…
“Tough act for both teams offensively. We just struggled all night for us. I never felt like we played the level that we are capable of. We got sped up sometimes, and then just struggled to make good shots. We did have good ball movement, but the when the ball is not going in, it tends to not look very good. It was that kind of night.”

On the layoff being a reason for the slow start…
“I do not know. We have had layoffs before. I think that it is a convenient excuse. We are not going to use that as an excuse. We had good practices coming in. It was a night, I think we got a little frustrated, and things did not go our way early. We had to play without Lew (Breanna Lewis) in stretches tonight, which is what our team needs to do and needs to learn better to do. Although we prefer not to play without Lew, we know realistically that is going to happen a times. I felt myself get little frustrated with our effort and our execution, and I probably could have coached a better game tonight. I just did not coach very well.”

On the defensive effort…
“I thought the effort was pretty good with the exception of our rebounding. We had multiple times where we boxed out, but we did not go chase it. We had a lot of plays tonight where we looked for others to make the play. That is what we have not been doing. That is what we did not do at El Paso. We were flying around, and everybody was rebounding the ball. We have got to get back to that because we need to be a team where all five rebound the ball.”

Kansas State Player Quotes
Sophomore Forward Breanna Lewis
On making key free throws…
“I was just trying to focus on not being frustrated and focus on the free throws.”

Freshman Guard Shaelyn Martin
On her ability to fill up the box score…
“Honestly I do whatever they need me to do. I was put in the four spot and just did what I needed to do there. We were trying to get the post feeds from the trigger spot because we like to play from the inside out. We just try to get anything triggered from the offensive or defensive side. I am just the player that can play anywhere and do what needs to be done. I take the challenge to do it the best I can.”

UT Arlington Head Coach Quotes
Head Coach Krista Gerlich
On the game…
“I thought that we really battled. We kind of countered everything that K-State came at us with. At the same time, we turned the basketball over too much and shot ourselves in the foot at times. I really liked our mentality, and I really like our fight in our kids.”

On K-State’s defense…
“I think their defense certainly picked it up. We are not used to seeing a zone for an entire game. They are so long, and they have great length in the zone. It is hard to get into rhythm. We battled well and held our own in the first half, and then we got a little shaky in the second half and let them get ahead of us.”

On their defense…
“We cannot send people to the free throw line 29 times and try to win, that is going to be difficult for us. Overall I thought that we guarded well and stood our ground and showed some real promise.”
