K-State vs. Abilene Christian Postgame Quotes

Kansas State Head Coach Quotes

Head Coach Jeff Mittie
Opening statement…
“We got off to a great start tonight. I thought that was critical for us. We had good focus and a good couple days of practice. I thought against Grambling State we played like we practiced, and today, I thought we played like we practiced yesterday. We had good attention to detail, and I thought that was very important in this game. This I think is a scout group. You have players that you have to make and put it on the floor. You have players on the inside that like to attack and if you allow that it can cause you problems. I thought our defense was pretty solid most of the night.”

On getting turnovers…
“I do not know if I have seen a number against a team that was pretty good at taking care of the basketball most of the time. I thought our defense was really swarming early in the game. It started out on top with our guards, but our wings were fantastic as well. I just think our group had a pretty good rhythm defensively. Our defense requires a lot of moving parts and it is a swarming type defense. When one player is not in sync, they can make you pay for it.”

On offensive effort…
“At the beginning we missed some easy baskets, but we just kept at it and certainly kept getting opportunities. I thought overall it was a solid effort all the way around. It was good to see us have the number of assists and not have it just come from one or two players. We have six players with three or more assists that is a pretty big number.”

K-State Player Quotes
Guard Haley Texada
On coming back from sickness…
“It felt good the first second, 30 seconds later I did not feel too hot. It was all good. I was just doing what I could for the team.”

On defense leading to offense…
“We emphasize tips and steals and those turn into offense. Not only that, but when you get that it is momentum and it is good for the defense. It creates energy and makes you want to do it some more. Why not just get all the steals you can and have fast breaks all night. That is easy.”

Forward Breanna Lewis
On her play…
“I tried to stay focused and do what I need to do and bring what I can bring to the team from practice to the games. I talked to coach and he wanted me to be consistent so I just try to focus on that more and just take it each game at a time, even practice too.”

On improving her play …
“It felt way better to me. I knew the things I need to focus on and that is what I did so it felt way better.”

Abilene Christian Head Coach Quotes
Head Coach Julie Goodenough
On how they matched up with K-State…
“After seeing our team match up with their team, there is no way to emulate their size in our practices. We knew that they were going to be in a 2-3 zone, they were going to be really quick and long in that. There is not really a way for us to really give our players a good visual of what that was going to be like. It took us that whole first half to figure out where the gaps were and where the ball needed to go, but I was really proud of our players for making adjustments, and getting the ball where it needed to be in the second half.”

On their effort…
“I think defensively we did a good job. What hurt us in the first half were the turnovers, and we could not get back and defend the transition. I was proud of our half-court defense, especially against the big post players that they had inside. We had to double and triple team them. I was pleased with our overall effort. I think it took us about 20 minutes to figure out that this team is really long, we are going to have to ball fake, and it is going to take a little more effort to get the ball around the defense. I was really proud of our adjustment in the second half, getting the ball to open players, and just getting the shots off, which we did not get enough shots off in the first half.”
