Cats Fend off Jayhawks

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Marlies Gipson scored a career-high 23 points and Ashley Sweat added 19 to lead No. 18 Kansas State past Kansas 59-50 Saturday, tying the school record with its ninth road win.

The Wildcats (17-1, 4-1 Big 12), leading the NCAA in scoring defense, held Kansas (12-6, 1-4) to just 37 percent shooting. It was the 14th time Kansas State held an opponent under 55 points.

Danielle McCray led the Jayhawks with 26 points and Aishah Sutherland contributed nine points and 12 rebounds, both career highs. Kansas coach Bonnie Henrickson fell to 1-10 against the Wildcats as Kansas State beat their archrivals for the 16th time in in their last 17 meetings.

Kansas, which was routed 72-39 at Kansas State on Jan. 10, closed the gap to four points late. But Ashley Sweat worked inside for a layup, got fouled and made the free throw to extend the lead to 44-37. Kansas came in leading the Big 12 in 3-point shooting but was only 2-for-10 from beyond the arc.

Kansas State will return to Manhattan to host Nebraska on Tuesday. The contest can be seen on FSN Kansas City beginning at 7 p.m.
