Three on Academic All-District Team

MANHATTAN, Kan. Three Kansas State women’s basketball student-athletes were named to the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VII Team on Thursday. Senior Shalee Lehning was named to the first team, while senior Marlies Gipson and junior Ashley Sweat received second team honors.

 

Lehning is a two-time Academic All-District VII recipient, earning a third team honor last season. The 5-9 guard from Sublette, Kan., is majoring in electronic journalism and is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 first team selection. Recently, Lehning was named a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award and is also a candidate for the Wade Trophy and Wooden Award.

 

As a first team selection, Lehning is now a candidate for the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team. In the history of the program, K-State has had four student-athletes earn Academic All-America honors.

 

Gipson earned her first Academic All-District VII honor and was a 2008 Academic All-Big 12 first team selection. The 6-0 forward from McPherson, Kan., is an elementary education major and is the K-State career leader in blocks with 240. She also ranks ninth in career rebounds with 734 and 21st in career points with 1,144. This season, Gipson is K-State’s second-leading scorer with 13.0 points per game and the second-leading rebounder with 6.9 per game.

 

Sweat also garnered her first Academic All-District VII honor. The 6-2 forward from McPherson, Kan., is a kinesiology major and is the Wildcats’ leading scorer with 16.2 points per game. Sweat became the 36th player in school history to surpass the 1,000-point barrier earlier this season and ranks 29th with 1,086 career points.

 

No. 18/14 Kansas State returns to action with a nationally televised contest at No. 8/7 Baylor on Saturday morning. Game time is set for 11 a.m., with live coverage on FSN from the Ferrell Center.
