Childs Named Big 12 Freshman of the Week

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State forward Jalana Childs has garnered her first career weekly honor from the Big 12 Conference, earning Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors for Feb. 16 in an announcement by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

 

In her first career start, Jalana Childs tallied her first career double-double with career-highs of 14 points and 16 rebounds in a career-best 32 minutes of action to aid the Wildcats to a 79-71 win over Oklahoma State on Sunday in Manhattan. Childs recorded her 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting and surpassed her previous career-high of 13 points against UTSA on Nov. 23, 2008.

 

The product of Orlando, Fla., registered the most rebounds by a Wildcat this season and the highest total by a K-State freshman since Shalee Lehning pulled in a school record-tying 20 rebounds against Louisiana Tech on Dec. 6, 2005.

 

Childs is the 10th player in school history to earn Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors and the first since Marlies Gipson earned the honor for the week for Jan. 30, 2006.

 

The 16th-ranked Wildcats (20-3, 7-3 Big 12) return to action on Wednesday at Missouri. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
