KSU Women's Basketball Schedule Announced

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State head women’s basketball coach Deb Patterson announced the 2007-08 schedule on Monday afternoon, which includes three teams who reached the postseason and six teams that finished with a winning record during the non-conference slate.


The Wildcats will open the season with an exhibition contest against Washburn on Wednesday, November 1. K-State begins the regular season at home on Saturday, November 10 against 2007 NCAA Tournament participant and Pac-10 member, Washington. The Huskies finished the 2007 season with an 18-13 record and were a No. 11 seed in the NCAA Tournament, falling to No. 6 seeded Iowa State in the opening round.


K-State will have a quick turnaround for its second game, as the Wildcats welcome in Southern Utah on Monday, November 12. This will be the first of two games against teams from The Summit League (formerly the Mid-Continent Conference). The Wildcats will also host Western Illinois on Wednesday, January 2.


Kansas State will make its first road trip of the 2007-08 season to its last place of action in 2006-07, Laramie, Wyo., to face the 2007 WNIT champion Wyoming Cowgirls.


K-State and Wyoming locked horns in two spectacular contests last season. The Wildcats captured the regular season meeting in Bramlage Coliseum, 68-62 in overtime, as Claire Coggins sent the game into its extra session with a 3-point field goal from half-court as time expired. The Cowgirls exacted revenge in the WNIT semifinals with an 89-79 win in three overtimes.


The Wildcats will then venture to Cancun, Mexico, for the Caribbean Challenge on November 21-22. The tournament will take place at the Moon Palace Resort, with games taking place in the ballroom theatre in the main lobby of the resort, which is located on the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula just off the Caribbean Sea. K-State will play Tulane and Michigan State, but the date of each contest is still to be determined.


Kansas State returns from south of the border to host the 13th annual Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic on November 30 and December 1. The field of teams participating this season includes: UTEP, Lipscomb and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Wildcats captured the crown in 2006 for the ninth time in the tournament’s history.


K-State will return to the road with a trip north on December 5 to face Wisconsin-Green Bay. The Wildcats defeated the Phoenix, 72-67, to open the 2006-07 season. Wisconsin-Green Bay went on to win the Horizon League and finish with a 29-4 record, ending its season in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.


Kansas State returns home to host Texas State on December 16 then travels to Omaha to play at Creighton on December 18.


The Wildcats will return from the holiday break with a road trip to Los Angeles, to play in the Loyola Marymount/ Hilton LAX Holiday Tournament on December 28-29. Teams in this tournament include: Loyola Marymount, Cal State Bakersfield and Arkansas-Little Rock.

K-State opens the Big 12 campaign with a Texas three-step, as the Wildcats will open the schedule at Texas A&M on January 9. The Wildcats will then tussle with Texas and their new head coach Gail Goestenkors. Goestenkors spent the last 15 years at Duke, where she amassed a record of 396-99 and two national championship game appearances.


Kansas State returns to Manhattan on January 16 for its third game against a Texas school, facing off with Texas Tech. This contest is the start of a three-game conference homestand for the Wildcats as they will also face Colorado (Jan. 19) and Iowa State (Jan. 23). The Wildcats hit the road to close out January with trips to Oklahoma State (January 26) and Nebraska (January 30).


K-State returns to Bramlage to open the month of February with Baylor (Feb. 2) and Sunflower State rival, Kansas (Feb. 9). Another two-game road trip highlights the middle of the month, as Kansas State faces Iowa State for the second time (Feb. 13) and travels to Missouri to face the Tigers (Feb. 17).


The Wildcats close out the month with two of its final three games at home, welcoming in Oklahoma (Feb. 20) and Nebraska (Feb. 27) with a trip to Colorado (Feb. 23) sandwiched in the middle.


K-State concludes Big 12 action with a visit from Missouri (March 1) and a trip to Kansas (March 5).


The 12th Annual Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship is scheduled for March 11-13 and 15 in Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.


Patterson returns four starters and eight letterwinners from the 2006-07 Postseason WNIT semifinal squad, including All-Big 12 honorable mention selection Shalee Lehning and Big 12 All-Rookie selection Ashley Sweat.
