Wildcats Cruise to 65-44 Win at UTEP

El PASO, Texas Shalee Lehning scored 11 points and dished out 11 assists for her 14th career double-double, while Shalin Spani added a career and game-high 13 points as Kansas State used a strong start to the second half to run past Texas-El Paso Friday night, 65-44, at Don Haskins Center.


Spani scored 10 of her 13 points in the first half to pace the Wildcats, while Lehning narrowly missed a triple-double after also collecting seven rebounds on the night. Ashley Sweat also poured in 13 points, 11 of which came in the second half, and six rebounds for Kansas State.


K-State (1-0) shot 46-percent from the floor for the game, including 50-percent (10-of-20) from three-point range and went on a 12-4 run to start the second half to extend its six-point halftime lead.


Texas-El Paso (0-1) was held to 34-percent shooting by the Wildcats, who also forced the Lady Miners into 16 turnovers on the evening.


Down 11-10 in the first half, the Wildcats went on a 15-0 run to take a commanding 25-11 lead with 7:14 remaining. Spani scored seven points during the run, while Danielle Zanotti added six. But, the Wildcats would score just three more points for the remainder of the half to take a 28-22 lead into the locker room.


Marlies Gipson also added seven points and nine rebounds for the Cats’, while Kari Kincaid chipped in nine points and Zanotti eight.

Kansas State returns to action Monday as it travels to Evanston, Ill., to face Northwestern. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT.
