K-State Wins Commerce Bank Classic

MANHATTAN, Kan.   Kansas State used a strong second half to propel itself past Alcorn State, 81-41, Saturday night in the title game of the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic. This is the first Wildcat Classic title for K-State since the 2003-04 season.

Kansas State (6-1) was led by tournament MVP Marlies Gipson with 16 points, while junior Shana Wheeler added 15 points off the bench.

Sophomore guard Shalee Lehning joined Gipson on the all-tournament team with 10 points and a season-high 11 assists. It is the first double-double of the season for the Sublette, Kan., native and the fourth of her career.

The Wildcats scored a season-low 26 points in the first half and held a slim three-point lead on the Lady Braves. This was as close as Alcorn State would be for the remainder of the contest, as K-State went on a 25-6 run to open the second half. The Wildcats were led during the run by junior Kimberly Dietz with 10 points, including two three-point connections, and Gipson with six.

Alcorn State (2-2) was led by all-tournament team selection Rasaan Powell with a game-high 18 points and five rebounds. The Lady Braves also received a strong effort from Shawntawnee Collins with six points and 10 boards.

The remainder of the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic all-tournament team was made up of Katie Madison of Idaho and Portia Wilson of Mississippi Valley State. Wilson scored a Wildcat Classic record of 38 points, but the Vandals of Idaho held off the Delta Devilettes, 76-72, in the consolation game.

Kansas State will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at Louisiana Tech. The Wildcats will return to Bramlage Coliseum on Dec. 15 when they host Santa Clara.
