Wildcats Defeat Rice at FIU Sun & Fun Classic

MIAMI, Fla. Kansas State women’s basketball team defeated Rice, 83-54, at Florida International University Sun & Fun Classic on Friday night.


Junior Kimberly Dietz led the Wildcats with a game-high 23 points.  Senior Claire Coggins added 17 points and sophomore Marlies Gipson chipped in 14 points.  Junior Carolyn McCullough came off the bench and scored a career-high 10 points.


K-State started the game with a 7-0 run on three straight layups and led 14-7 six minutes into the game.  Rice answered with a run of their own to tie the game at 14 at 10:38 mark.  Both teams traded baskets for the next five minutes before the Wildcats went on a 14-7 run to close out the half and took a 34-27 lead.


K-State extended the lead to 13 points with six straight points to open the second half.  Rice cut the deficit to nine points, 46-37, at 14:36 but that was the closest they would get as the Wildcats hit 10 three-pointers in the second half.


Dietz finished six-for-eight for the three point range including five in the second half.  Sophomore Shalee Lehning led the game with nine rebounds and seven assists while junior Shana Wheeler blocked a game-high six shots.


The Wildcats shot 46 percent from the floor and 62 percent from the three-point range.


K-State will face the host Florida International in the championship game tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. (CT).
