Seventh-ranked Equestrian Falls In Big 12 Championship Opener

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Kansas State equestrian team went head-to-head with top-seeded Texas A&M Friday in the first round of the 2011 Big 12 Championships as the Aggies narrowly defeated the Wildcats, 10-6, at the Brazos County Expo Center.

Following the loss, K-State (5-9) will battle Baylor (9-7), who was knocked off by second-seeded Oklahoma State, for third place on Saturday. The Wildcats split a pair of matches with Baylor during the regular season with their 1366.5-1359 victory over the Bears coming back on October 15.

In the Hunter Seat arena, Texas A&M bested Kansas State, 5-3, on Friday afternoon.

In Equitation Over Fences, freshman Sarah Mershon was the lone point scorer for the Wildcats as she defeated Aggie rider Kori Pickett, 152-143. Mershon's victory marked her fifth win of the year, which is tops on the English squad for a Wildcat newcomer. In Equitation On the Flat, K-State's Rachel Webster knocked off A&M rider Elizabeth Solch, 164-161. Rounding out the scoring for K-State was sophomore Meredith Finch. The Oxford, Ohio native blasted Kristin Bell of Texas A&M, 160-144, to pick up her sixth win of the season.

On the Western side, K-State rode with effort and energy but was bested by Texas A&M, 5-3.

In Reining, senior Alecia Zimbelman led the way with a 142.5-139 victory over A&M's Randi Standley. Friday's victory marked the fourth win of the season for the St. Francis, Kan. native. Sophomore Sam Etsell added to the Wildcat point total by edging Becca Murray of Texas A&M, 142.5-141. In Horsemanship, freshman Rachel Wetherell notched her fifth win of the season by defeating Katie Lisabeth of Texas A&M, 149-144.5.

The action will kick off tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., from the Brazos County Expo Center in College Station where Texas A&M (11-1) and Oklahoma State (8-5) will square off for Big 12 supremacy, while K-State and Baylor will fight for third place.
