K-State Downs New Mexico State in Road Opener

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The No. 7 Kansas State equestrian team faced its first road test of the 2012-13 season and came out with its third straight win of the young season. The Wildcats (3-1) cruised to a 12-3 win (1199.5-1147) over No. 9 New Mexico State on Friday to begin this two-meet road swing.
“The team rode really strong today in their first road meet of the season,” stated head coach Casie Maxwell. “We got better in the second competition and hope to continue that trend tomorrow morning. I'm extremely proud of their camaraderie and support of one another out here on the road.'

In Hunt seat action, K-State registered a 7-1 win across the two disciplines. In Equitation over Fences, the Wildcats received wins from junior Rachel Webster, senior Kali Yates and junior Cat Avolese. Webster tallied a narrow 73-72 decision over the Aggies’ Shannon Dooley for her sixth win this season.

Yates rode past Amber Tassel, 74-65, to boost her unbeaten record to 5-0 this season. Avolese closed out the K-State win in Equitation over Fences with a 76-73 decision over Laura Bostwick.

In Equitation on the Flat, a pair of Wildcats continued their momentum from Fences victories into the Flat arena and helped K-State sweep its way to a 4-0 win. Yates notched an 85-78 win over Hannah Swarthout and improved to 6-0 this fall. Yates was followed by Webster, as she defeated Dooley again, this time by an 85-75 margin. Webster’s fall record now stands at 7-1.

Senior Meredith Finch improved her unbeaten record this fall to 4-0 with an 88-70 win over Laura Bostwick. Capping the afternoon in the Flat arena against the Aggies was senior Larissa Laffey with an 87-80 decision over Sydney Morse. With her strong ride, Laffey picked up the first of K-State’s three Most Outstanding Performer (MOP) honors on Friday. The win also pushed Laffey’s record to a flawless 4-0.

On the Western side, K-State secured a 5-2 decision with a 3-0-1 win in Horsemanship and a 2-2 split in Reining. In Horsemanship, senior Hannah Ribera set the tone early for K-State with a 74.5-74 win over Megan Gould. Ribera garnered MOP honors with her winning ride.

Junior Rachel Wetherell improved K-State’s lead by carding a 72.5-65.5 win over Clarissa Edgerton. Senior Whitney Unkefer secured the win in the discipline for the Wildcats with a 74-73 win over Lauren DeVoe.

In Reining, senior Sam Etsell continued her strong start to the 2012-13 season with a 71.5-61.5 win over Stefanie Story. Etsell is now 3-0 this season and has two MOP honors this season after her winning ride on Friday.

Also notching a win in reining on Friday was junior Jordan Cox. Cox tallied a 70.5-68 win over New Mexico State’s Haley Newkirk

In its second match of the weekend, Kansas State holds a 7-1 lead over West Texas A&M. K-State won Reining, 3-1, and cruised to a 4-0 win in Equitation on the Flat. Full results of the Wildcats’ match with the Buffaloes will be made available tomorrow on kstatesports.com.
