Equestrian Loses Close Battle to Oklahoma State

Stillwater, Okla.- The Kansas State equestrian team went head to head with No. 5 Oklahoma State Saturday but came up just short in the end, dropping a tightly-contested 13-11 battle with the Cowgirls. In the hunter seat portion of the show, the Wildcats defeated the Cowgirls, 7-5, but were downed on the western side, 8-4.

Two Wildcat riders picked up their first varsity wins of the season, including senior Dresden Sommer and junior Courtney Watters. Junior Morgan Campbell and Senior Whitney Snyder’s hard work paid off as both were awarded MVP honors; Campbell in reining and Snyder over fences.

Snyder picked up two wins on the day as she gave Sarah Summers her first loss on the year, 78-74, on the flat and Kaila Nix, 80-76 over fences. Summers previously held a perfect 6-0 record on the year. With her wins, Snyder moved to an overall record of 13-3 on the year and leads the team with three MVP honors.

Other riders picking up wins on the flat include Sommer, who defeated Sarah Brown, 70-68, to go to 1-0 on the year, and Jenny Giraldin, who defeated Jen McLauglin, 73-68.

Over fences, Doyle picked up a huge win by defeating Erin Prutow, 77-73, putting her at 1-1 on the season. Kendall Marvin and Leslie Yates also picked up wins for the Wildcats.

“We came out stronger today than we have been in a long time,” said Ashley Foster, Hunter Seat head coach. “Throughout the day, we stayed consistent. Our seniors led us in our win; they all performed at a high level today. In addition, Whitney Snyder picked up an MVP over fences.”

Senior Alyssa Freeman came out strong in horsemanship as she defeated Suzanne Randolph by a close margin, 72.5-71.5. Freeman now holds an 8-1 mark for the Wildcats on the year. Watters picked up her first varsity win on the season by defeating Kilee Stewart, 73.5-69.

Senior Tara Hallan rode to victory and moved herself to 2-0 on the year as she upset Leah Kuehn, 72-70.5, in the reining portion of competition. Campbell had an outstanding ride and picked up her first MVP honor for the year by downing Molly Tipton, 72-68.

"Today was hard on the western riders, especially after all their extra hours in the saddle,” said Casie Williamson, Western head coach. “We made some mental mistakes and weren't as tough as we could have been as a team. However, we did have outstanding performances from Freeman and Watters in horsemanship, and Hallan and Campbell in reining. Morgan made up for her frustrating ride last weekend with a stellar performance that earned her the Reining MVP award."

In exhibition competition, K-State lost to Oklahoma State, 4-3, but still put up a fight. Senior Erin Paulsen picked up a win on the flat by defeating Jessica O’Donnell in a tight ride, 71-70. Junior Dana Johnson rode to victory in reining and junior Josie Kness moved to an impressive 4-0 record in exhibition horsemanship as she defeated Lauren Olson, 69.5-68.5.

K-State will have week off and then will be on the road for back-to-back shows against Texas A&M on February 20 and Baylor on February 21.
