Wildcats Finish Two Day Scrimmage

ST. LOUIS, Mo. The Kansas State equestrian team finished up a two-day IHSA scrimmage with a first-place finish Sunday and a second-place finish on Saturday. The Wildcats posted a score of 43, defeating second place Northern Illinois, which scored 33.

In Saturday’s second-place finish, K-State scored 39 points dropping the competition to Northern Illinois, which scored 42. Freshman Trish Carney had a strong performance, winning Reserve High Point Rider honors.

The weekend’s scrimmage did not count towards selection for varsity championships and no official points were awarded but it did give some young riders a great opportunity to ride against IHSA opponents.

“We had great performances from Jen LeJune, Trish Carney and Jessica Hensley,” assistant coach Ashley Duda said on Saturday. “We made some mental mistakes and lost some points here and there but it was a really good horse show and I am very proud of our girls.”

In Sunday’s first place show, the Wildcats took home 10 first place finishes including, Macie Ayers in Intermediate Equitation Over Fences Section B and Intermediate Equitation on the Flat, which helped her win the Reserve High Point Rider award.

“Today we had a lot fewer mental mistakes,” Duda said Sunday. “I was very impressed with the riding of Nicole Harkness and Macie Ayers. I really thought this weekend was great for our riders and we gained a lot of experience from it.”

The first full team competition of the spring season is set for Saturday, Feb. 24 at Baylor. The Wildcats will host their first shows of the spring on March 3 and 4, beginning with an IHSA Western show on March 3 before hosting Texas A&M on March 4 in a varsity competition.
