Equestrian Team to Wear Pink in Texas

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State equestrian team, ranked No. 8 in the Women’s Intercollegiate Equestrian National Coaches Poll, will face off against two of the nation’s top five teams this weekend as it travels to take on the No. 4 Texas A&M Aggies on Friday and the No. 2 Baylor Bears on Saturday. The show Friday is set to begin at 10 a.m., in Bryan, Texas, and the Saturday show will kick off at 10 a.m., in Waco, Texas.

The team will be wearing pink on their uniforms this weekend to show its support of Breast Cancer Awareness. The Hunter Seat riders will be wearing pink ribbons on the lapels of their coats while the Western riders will show pink in their pony tails which will replace the customary purple and silver they usually wear.

The Wildcats lost two heartbreakers to both the Aggies and the Bears back in the fall semester. K-State lost to Texas A&M, 10-9, back on October 3, while it dropped a tiebreaker to the Bears on October 17, 1294-1269.5, in Manhattan. The Wildcats will look to avenge both losses this weekend on the road.

"This weekend is going to be an extremely challenging road trip for our team,” said Casie Williamson, Western head coach. “We have been riding great at home, but we need to show that strength and confidence away from home. I want to see the team stay mentally focused and give strong rides at both shows."

Against Texas A&M, the horsemanship group will consist of seniors Jana Lechtenberg and Alyssa Freeman, juniors Laura Browne, Mikaela Sundgren, and Courtney Watters, and sophomore Sierra Fredrick. Freeman continues to impress and will lead the team with an outstanding 8-1 horsemanship record on the year.

Sophomore Alecia Zimbelman will lead K-State in all aspects of reining competition as she holds a 7-2 mark on the year with 3 MVP awards. Seniors Tara Hallan and Alyssa Freeman, and juniors Morgan Campbell, Kaylee Stout, and Dani Pettera will also be riding for the Wildcats on Friday.

Senior Whitney Snyder looks to continue her winning streak and will pace the Wildcats in Hunter Seat competition. Snyder holds a 7-1 record over fences and is 6-2 on the flat to set her overall total at 13-3 with three MVP honors on the year. Other riders showing over fences are senior Leslie Yates, juniors Ashley Collett, Kendall Marvin, and Bridget Doyle, and sophomore Jen Rawle.

Five seniors will lead the way for K-State on the flat including seniors Jenny Giraldin, Yates, Snyder, Dresden Sommer, and Katie Mellon. Stephanie Patterson, the lone freshman competing on the flat, will be riding for the Wildcats as well.

K-State will have several riders compete on the exhibition level on Friday against the Aggies. Seniors Caley Coffey and Hayley Milch, and junior Josie Kness will be showing in exhibition horsemanship and junior Dana Johnson will be showing in exhibition reining. Kness moved to a 4-0 mark after her win two weekends ago. Junior Allie Archer will show for the first time this year as she will ride in exhibition flat competition. Senior Hannah Schroller will line up for the first time this year and she will show in exhibition fences against the Aggies.

Texas A&M has been strong all year, and will give the Wildcats stiff competition on Friday. Individual national title winner Caroline Gunn will look to pick up another win for the Aggies. She holds a 5-1-1 record on the year and owns four MVP honors. Tara Christianson will look to stay undefeated as she has a 7-0 mark on the year in reining competition.  Kristi Waldal will pace the Aggies over fences with a 5-3 record and two MVP honors, and Tegan Zealy will lead on the flat with one MVP honor and a 4-3-1 mark on the year.

Several of the same Wildcats riders will show on Saturday against Baylor; however, a couple of new riders will make their debut as well. Freeman, Lechtenberg, Browne, Sundgren, Watters, and Fredrick will show for the Wildcats in the horsemanship competition. Campbell, Hallan, Zimbelman, Freeman, Stout, and Pettera will ride in the reining category for K-State.

"We will be facing tough competition this weekend as both Texas A&M and Baylor have strong teams,” said Ashley Foster, Hunter Seat head coach. “It will be exciting to get to compete against both these teams for the second time this year. We will need to ride very correctly in order to win. Our riders are very capable of putting in fundamentally strong rounds. We plan to be consistent and ride confidently."

Snyder will continue to lead the Wildcats in Hunter Seat competition against Baylor for both fences and flat competition. Collett, Rawle, Marvin, and Yates will ride over fences as well. Doyle, junior Kayla Potter, sophomore Jennifer Wright, and senior Christine Fosnacht will show in the exhibition fences group. Wright and Fosnacht will be looking to pick up their first wins of the season as they are making their debut against Baylor. Giraldin, Yates, Mellon, and Patterson will try to contribute to a Wildcat victory on the flat against the Bears. Sommer, Schroller, senior Paige Kovari, and senior Erin Paulsen will show for K-State in the exhibition flat group.

Lisa Goldman will lead the Bears over fences as she holds a 7-2 mark and owns five MVP honors in varsity competition. Mary Smitson will also be a strong competitor for Baylor as she has a 7-5 record and two MVP honors. Allison Orosz and Madelyn Mooney will lead the Bears on the Western side. Orosz marks a 7-3 record and two MVP awards, while Mooney holds a 6-3 mark with four MVP honors.

Results from both shows will be posted as they become available.
