K-State pulls out win against Texas A&M

MANHATTAN, Kan. After trailing 6-4 early in the show, the Kansas State women’s Equestrian team came from behind to edge out a very talented Texas A&M squad 10-9, Sunday at Fox Creek Stables, handing the Aggies their first defeat of the season in Western.

Following a 4-1 loss in Equitation over Fences, the Wildcats took home wins in Equitation on the Flat, 3-2, Reining, 3-2, and Horsemanship, 3-1, to wrap up the win in the final show of the weekend.

Last week in College Station the Wildcats dropped the overall show to the Aggies, 14-8, including 9-2 in the Western category. In Sunday’s Western show K-State tallied a 6-3 win.

Junior Whitney Snyder took home the Equitation on the Flat MVP award, an award that she has now received five times this year, while 2006 IHSA Reining National Champion Sara Weller received the MVP honor in the Reining category.

K-State also knocked off two of the hottest riders in the country Sunday, as Laura Browne defeated Caroline Gunn, 77-76.5, in Horsemanship, giving Gunn her first loss of the season. Senior Sara Weller defeated Texas A&M’s Maggie Gratny, 76.5- 75.5, in Reining, to hand Gratny her first loss of the season.

In addition, Lesie Yates' 81-62 win over Christina Matz in Equitation on the Flat was something special as A&M's Matz had not been defeated in a varsity match in two full seasons.

“Today the team came out focused and rode aggressively,” western coach Casie Lisabeth said. “We were really well prepared this week. Our riders got what they deserved today with the win.”

The head-to-head match also featured J.V. classes in, Horsemanship, Equitation on the Flat, Equitation over Fences, Ancillary Equitation and Reining. The Wildcats tied A&M in Horsemanship, Equitation over Fences and Reining, but fell in Equitation on the Flat and Ancillary Equitation.

Kansas State will host Georgia on Sunday, March 11, in a head-to-head varsity competition at Fox Creek Stables. The show will feature a senior recognition ceremony to honor the 16 senior Wildcat riders.
