IRVING, Texas – After going a perfect 3-0 during the month of February, Kansas State equestrian rider Savannah Smith was recognized as the Big 12 Rider of the Month in Reining on Wednesday.

“I am so proud of Savannah for earning Big 12 Rider of the Month honors and finally reaping the benefits for all of her hard work,” said head coach Casie Maxwell. “She has been a strong and consistent competitor for us and is a huge asset to our team.”

Hailing from Chinook, Mont., Smith has had an impressive spring season so far. She earned her first win on the road at South Dakota State, when she defeated MaKayla Reed, 71.5-68.5. Her win against Reed helped the Wildcats defeat the Jackrabbits, 10-9. Smith picked up her second win two weeks later at Oklahoma State, where she took down Mackenzie Fugitt, 72-69. In K-State’s latest outing against No. 7 Baylor, Smith knocked off Jessica Leach, 69-61.5.

“I am very grateful and honored to be selected as Big 12 Reining Rider of the Month this February,” said Smith. “I could not have done it without the support and guidance of my teammates and coaches.”

K-State ends the regular season on Saturday at home against No. 9 TCU at Timbercreek Stables. The meet is free and open to the public.
