Equestrian Rides Past No. 6 Auburn

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State equestrian team ended its regular season Friday on a positive note by upsetting the No. 6 ranked Tigers of Auburn University, 11-9. The Hunter Seat squad lost to the Tigers, 6-4, but the Western squad bounced back and defeated Auburn, 7-3.

In Hunter Seat competition, senior Jenny Giraldin defeated Katie Breedlove, 80-73, and earned MVP honors on the flat while helping pace the Wildcats to victory.

"I feel we are riding much more consistent than we have been all season," said Giraldin. "I think we are in a great position to compete for a championship at the conference and national levels."

Other riders picking up wins for the Wildcats on the flat include seniors Leslie Yates and Whitney Snyder. Yates defeated Rebecca Rifkin, 81-74, while Snyder defeated Ali Loprete, 69-64. Snyder holds a record of 10-2 on the flat. Over fences, only one Wildcat rider rode home with a win. Sophomore Jen Rawle defeated Dottie Grubb, 78-71.

In horsemanship, Jana Lechtenberg helped K-State past the Tigers with an upset over Bailey Dymond, 77.5-75.5. Junior Courtney Watters defeated MVP award winner Kylie Miller by a close margin, 77-76.5, and junior Laura Browne rode past Kim Pope, 78-77.

"Everyone rode amazing today," said Lechtenberg. "Everybody rode their horses really well. I was proud of our girls and it was a great way for our seniors to end their regular season careers."

On the reining side, Kaylee Stout defeated Lyndsey Jordan, 71.5-68.5, while Alecia Zimbelman also picked up a victory by defeating MVP honoree Ashton Fairey, 72.5-72.

Auburn's exhibition squad defeated the Wildcats, 3-2. Riding home with victories for K-State were Erin Paulsen, who defeated  Liza Luker, 63-0 on the flat, and Alden Haugh, who upset Mary Casey, 74-73.5 in horsemanship.

"I really enjoyed being on the team the past four years and seeing it grow from IHSA competition to a varsity sport," said Giraldin. "I see a great future in our younger riders and hope for the best in our seniors. I know they will all do great when they are done with their careers at K-State."
