Equestrian Ends Regular Season With an 8-5 Win

MANHATTAN, Kan. The Kansas State equestrian team finished off the regular season schedule with an 8-5 win over Fresno State Friday at Fox Creek Farm.

Behind an MVP performance by first year rider Tara Hallan, who took home the Reining MVP award, K-State has now brought their overall record to 6-6, on the season. Hallan is now 4-0-1 on the season and every varsity rider on the Western squad has earned an MVP award this season for the Wildcats.

"Tara Hallan had an outstanding day,” Western head coach Casie Williamson said. “She has performed so well for the Reining squad and continues to take home wins competition after competition.”

K-State took home two other MVP honors on the day as senior Whitney Snyder won the MVP award in Equitation on the Flat and sophomore Mikaela Sundgren won her first career Horsemanship MVP honor. Fresno State’s Lisa Wells took home the final MVP award in Equitation over Fences.

The Wildcats Western squad notched a 4-2 win today as the Horsemanship team shutout Fresno State, 3-0, and Reining ended in a 2-1 win for the Bulldogs.

The Wildcats continued their success in the English portion of the show with a win in Equitation on the Flat, 3-1, and a close loss in Equitation over Fences, 2-1.

"Our Fences team made a lot of mental mistakes in the ring today,” English head coach Ashley Foster said. “In practice we are riding very well but we just can’t put it all together in our varsity competitions. After spring break we will work on things to fix the mental problems that are not allowing us to keep our rhythm when approaching our jumps. I believe we can get this all straightened out before the Central Championships match."

Junior Leslie Yates took home the only win on the day for the Fences team as she posted a 79-78 victory, Yates now has 11 varsity wins on the season.

In Equitation on the Flat, freshman Julie Wolfert picked up her second varsity win in a row as she won her match, 77-76. Junior Jenny Giraldin also turned in a victorious ride as she posted a 70-68 win.

“The Western riders did exactly what we asked them to do today,” Williamson said. “We truly rode the best we have ridden all year.”

Junior Jana Lechtenberg picked up her fifth win of the season in Horsemanship with a score of 76.5-74.5, and sophomore Laura Browne provided K-State with a spark as she won her match, 75-73.5, in Horsemanship.

“I am really pleased with how we ended the regular season,” Williamson said. “I am not even upset at some of the mistakes we had today, because we rode hard on every pattern and that is what we have been teaching our riders to do all season.”

The Wildcats next action takes place Saturday Mar. 29 and Sunday Mar. 30 at Fox Creek Farm for the Central Championships, beginning at 9 a.m.
