Oklahoma State Wins Central Championships; K-State Places Third

MANHATTAN, Kan. In the final day of competition Kansas State defeated top-seeded Texas A&M, 11-5, to finish third on the weekend, while Oklahoma State took down Baylor, 10-5, to take home the Central Championship title Sunday at Fox Creek Farm.

Oklahoma State took home both the Reining and Equitation on the Flat MVP’s for the day, as Jacque Roberts won her Reining match, 73-65, against Madelyn Mooney and Sam Collingsworth won her Flat showdown, 77-67, over Nicole Brown.

K-State took home the Equitation over Fences MVP award, as senior Whitney Snyder rode to victory in Equitation over Fences and Texas A&M’s Caroline Gunn took home the final MVP award in Horsemanship.

Oklahoma State dominated the competition from the start as they won the Equitation over Fences category, 3-1. After a 3-1, win in Equitation on the Flat and Reining, the Cowgirls dropped the Horsemanship class, 2-1.

The Wildcats also came right out of the gates to start the competition as they defeated the Aggies, 3-1, in Equitation over Fences and Equitation on the Flat. After tying in Horsemanship, 2-2, K-State dominated the Reining category winning, 3-1.

“We rode great again today, this weekend was a great experience for our team,” Western head coach Casie Williamson said. “We couldn’t have asked for more this weekend. Everyone really pulled together to make this a great show.”

Junior Alyssa Freeman picked up her sixteenth win of the season in Horsemanship with a score of 77-69.5. Freeman finished the weekend with a 3-1 record and earned one MVP. Sophomore Laura Browne provided K-State with a spark as she won her match, 73.5-73, in Horsemanship. Browne won both her matches on the weekend and now has nine varsity wins on the season.

In Reining, freshman Alecia Zimbelman picked up her seventh varsity win as she won her match, 69.5-67.5. Sophomore Tara Hallan turned in a stellar ride with her, 69.5-67, win over Maggie Gratny.

"We finally rode to our potential today,” English head coach Ashley Foster said. “It was very refreshing to have solid jumps in the fences category."

After managing only one win as a team Saturday against Oklahoma State, Kansas State’s English squad turned it around Sunday with a big win from junior Leslie Yates as she won her match, 84-76. Sophomore Ashley Collett continued K-State’s supremacy with an 80-78 win over Kristi Waldal.

In Equitation on the Flat, freshman Julie Wolfert picked up her third varsity win of the season as she won her match narrowly, 71-70. Snyder took home wins in Equitation on the Flat and fences to bring her season win total to seventeen.

K-State will finish off the season April 17-19 in Waco, Texas at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships. Last season, the Wildcats English squad took third at the competition and Western finished sixth.
