Western to Ride for Third Place on Final Day of VENC

WACO, Texas The Kansas State Equestrian team ended Friday’s competition two points shy of competing for the national championship, as Texas Christian defeated K-State, 5-3, on the Western side. The Hunter Seat squad finished its season Friday against Baylor losing in a tiebreaker, 4-4.

K-State will face third-seeded Oklahoma State Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Heart O' Texas Fair complex.

Kansas State and Oklahoma State split the two regular season match-ups this season as the Cowgirls defeated K-State, 17-5, on February 2 in Stillwater, Okla., and the Wildcats rode past Oklahoma State, 10-9, on February 29 at Fox Creek Farms.

The two Big 12 rivals faced off again on Mar. 29 at the Central Championships with Oklahoma State taking home a win, 8-7.

“I am really proud of how our team rode today,” Western head coach Casie Williamson said. “We had a great recovery against Texas A&M this morning in the Reining and that gave our girls a great start and a lot of confidence. Our team was great against TCU, but in that close of competition you have to be perfect.”

Kansas State and Texas Christian kept the competition close from the beginning as the Reining portion of the show ended in a 2-2 tie. The Frogs responded winning the Horsemanship category, 3-1, ending K-State’s shot at competing for a national championship.

In order to face the Frogs, K-State’s fifth-seeded Western squad defeated No. 4 Texas A&M and did so in thrilling fashion tying the Aggies, 4-4. After the raw scores were compiled, Kansas State came out with the victory, 1013.5-1013.

Texas A&M dominated competition from the start, taking home a 3-1 win in horsemanship, but Kansas State battled back with a 3-1 win in reining.

Sophomore Tara Hallan turned in a solid ride narrowly defeating Maddi Williams, 141.5-141. Sophomore Morgan Campbell also helped the Reining squad ride to victory turning in a ride of 147, while junior Alyssa Freeman picked up the final win for the Wildcats with a 142.5-138.5 win.

Junior Jana Lechtenberg took home the lone win for the Horsemanship squad with a 143.5-136 win over Randi Standley.

“We definitely stepped it up a notch this afternoon and we plan to carry that same plan into tomorrow’s competition against OSU,” Williamson said.

Although Texas A&M defeated K-State’s Hunter Seat squad, 5-2, junior Leslie Yates and freshman Julie Wolfert highlighted the teams competition as Yates won her match 161-140, in Equitation over Fences and Wolfert took home a win in Equitation on the Flat with a score of 154. Jenny Giraldin was also victorious in her flat round, 149-140.
