Hunt Seat and Western Squads Advance to Final Day of VENC

WACO, Texas. The Kansas State equestrian team finished up day two of competition at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships Thursday in Waco, Texas, with the Hunt Seat squad advancing to the third place bracket and the Western squad advancing to the fifth place bracket.


K-State’s seventh-seeded English squad finished up second round competition Thursday with a 6-2 win over second-seeded Oklahoma State in the Hunt Seat bracket. The Wildcats began the round Wednesday evening with a 3-1 victory on the flat and wrapped up the win with a 3-1 win in fences. Sophomore Leslie Yates led all riders in her 160-135 win over Paige Hortman, while freshman Kendall Marvin and senior Casey Finnell also picked up wins for K-State.


In third round action, the Wildcats lost to Georgia, 7-1.Georgia came out strong in the first competition on the flat winning, 3-1. Sophomore Jenny Giraldin collected the only win for the Cats winning 151- 150 over Logan Fiorentino. Georgia swept the fences competition, 4-0. K-State will now face four-seeded Auburn in the third place bracket Friday.


In Western action Thursday, for the third time this season third-seeded K-State and sixth-seeded Oklahoma State tied in competition. In Thursday’s match the result was a 4-4 tie and the defending national champion in Western, Oklahoma State, advanced with a raw score, 994-979.5.


The second round action began Wednesday evening with K-State and Oklahoma State tying in reining, 2-2. On Thursday in horsemanship, again both teams tied, 2-2. Junior Lindsey Salsbury defeated Ashley Koch, 143.5-141.5, and freshman Laura Browne beat Samantha Davidson, 143.5-140, in the wins for the Wildcats.


K-State then advanced to the consolation round and defeated second-seeded Georgia in a tiebreaker,988.5-985.5, after finishing in a 4-4 tie. In reining, both teams tied 2-2, with senior Dennon Zimbelman picking up her first win of the competition, 137.5-137, over Anna Hichborn. Senior Sara Weller took home the other win, 147.5-146.5 over Megan Darby.


In horsemanship both teams battled hard as they tied, 2-2. Sophomore Jana Lechtneberg collected her first win of the weekend with a 141-0 win over Lauren Love. Sara Weller collected her third win of the day, 143-137.5, over Kelly Mundrick.  


“Today all of our riders stepped up in the afternoon session and we hope to do the same in tomorrow’s competition,” Western coach Casie Lisabeth said. “Sara Weller had excellent rides in Reining and Horsemanship and has really been great this week.”


K-State will wrap up the final day of competition Friday in Western against eighth-seeded Baylor for fifth place.
