Western Captures Third Place at VENC

WACO, Texas After a long weekend of competition, Kansas State’s Western squad defeated Oklahoma State, 6-1, and earned third place at the VENC Saturday at the Heart O’ Texas Fair Complex.

In 2007 Kansas State placed sixth in the Western competition and fourth overall at the VENC.

Losing only one match in Horsemanship, the Wildcats continued their supremacy winning the Reining portion of the show, 3-0, with Alyssa Freeman tying her match at 146.

This is the second win for the Wildcats over Oklahoma State, as K-State rode past the Cowgirls, 10-9, earlier this season on Feb. 29 at Fox Creek Farm.

“I am thrilled for the Western squad’s performance today and all weekend,” Western head coach Casie Williamson said. “They not only rode great, but had incredible confidence and support in themselves and one another. The entire show was definitely a team effort and everyone worked hard to make it happen.”

In her final ride as a Wildcat, senior Lindsey Salsbury led the Horsemanship squad with a pivotal 147.5-142.5 win. Sophomore Laura Browne and junior Alyssa Freeman picked up the other two wins for K-State, as Browne defeated Samantha Davidson, 146-136, and Freeman rode to victory with a score of 150.

In Reining, sophomore Morgan Campbell captured a win with a score of 144, while sophomore Tara Hallan collected her eight win in varsity competition and freshman Alecia Zimbelman picked up a 149.5-147 win over Jacque Roberts.

“This was a great end to our season and we plan to pick up right where we left off next year,” Williamson said.

Texas Christian defeated Georgia, 4-4, winning the tiebreaker to become Western champion and Auburn defeated Texas A&M, 4-2, to take home the Hunter Seat championship. With Georgia’s second place finish in Western and third place finish in Hunter Seat, the Bulldogs earned the overall VENC champion crown.
